Antioxidant Activity, Carbohydrate‐Hydrolysing Enzyme Inhibition, Antihyperglycaemic Effect and Associated Expression Changes of Bryophyllum pinnatum‐Fortified Wheat‐Plantain Snack in Streptozotocin‐Induced Diabetic Rats

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The developed wheat‐plantain‐based snack with Bryophyllum pinnatum had enhanced antioxidant properties, with high α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase enzyme inhibitory activities. When fed to STZ‐induced diabetic rats, it showed antidiabetic, hypo‐lipidaemic and anti‐inflammatory potentials, thus making it a fresh opportunity for the snacking community who are

The US Virtual Herbarium: working with individual herbaria to build a national resource

open access: yesZooKeys, 2012
The goal of the US Virtual Herbarium (USVH) project is to digitize (database, image, georeference) all specimens in all US herbaria, enabling them to be made available through a single portal. Herbaria house specimens of plants, fungi, and algae, so USVH

Survey of Medicinal Plants in the Main US Herbaria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Plant identification has been waning during the recent expansive study of medicinal plants. This has been particularly true among manufacturers of products being marketed for natural heath care sectors.

Morphological and phenological shifts in semiarid grasses paralleled climate and land use changes

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science
Plants respond to climate change through shifts in traits such as height, leaf width, and flowering time. However, little is known about how grass species in semiarid ecosystems are responding. In this study, we tested three hypotheses: (1) grass species

Pollen Morphology of Crucianella L. (Rubiaceae) Based on Light and Scanning Electron Microscope Data and Implications for Taxonomy

open access: yesMicroscopy Research and Technique, EarlyView.
This study provides the palynological analysis of 12 Crucianella L. taxa using LM and SEM. Variations in pollen size, aperture number, and exine ornamentation were identified as key traits, demonstrating their taxonomic value for distinguishing closely related species and subspecies within the genus. ABSTRACT Crucianella L.

Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis and comprehensive evaluation of antibacterial, antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties of Thymus capitatus extracts from Libya

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The emergence of multidrug‐resistant bacteria necessitates the development of alternative therapeutic approaches. Thymus capitatus, a Mediterranean medicinal plant, has been traditionally used to treat various ailments, but its bioactive potential from Libyan origins remains underexplored.

Saussurea × media (Asteraceae), a new natural hybrid between S. parviflora and S. controversa

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Saussurea × media Yusupovsky and E.Pjak (Asteraceae), a new nothospecies from the Altai‐Sayan Mountains, is described and illustrated. In this study, we sequenced the internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the chloroplast intergenic spacers rsp16‐trnQ and ycf4‐cemA to verify the hypothesis of hybridization between Saussurea parviflora

Further fragmentation of Timonius (Rubiaceae): reinstatement of Abbottia based on morphology and molecular sequence data

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
The circumscription of the Paleotropical dioecious and species‐rich genus Timonius Rumph. ex DC. nom. cons.has long been based on a restricted combination of morphological features, namely valvate corolla aestivation and drupes bearing multiple, free, single‐seeded pyrenes. Previous studies, focused on different taxonomic problems in tribe Guettardeae,
