Although the conventional wisdom is that floral traits of plants evolved in concert with their mutualistic pollinators, here we showed that several key sexual and mating traits of plants, which modulate their outcrossing strategy, evolved in response to the pressure exerted by their antagonistic insect herbivores.

Local canopy cover, shade tree identity and landscape tree cover shape leaf‐cutter ant nest density and herbivory in cacao agroforestry systems

Our findings provide practical guidance for agroforestry management by demonstrating that intercropping with selected species can mitigate damage from leaf‐cutter ants in cacao agroforests. At the landscape scale, high tree cover was associated with low herbivory rates, emphasising the need to maintain or restore forested habitats.

Global insular leaf size shifts follow the island rule, independently of insect herbivory and macroclimate

We found a positive, non‐linear, saturating relationship between mainland and island leaf sizes, reflecting an island rule‐like pattern. Small‐leaved mainland species tend to develop larger leaves on islands, while this effect weakens for larger‐leaved species, a pattern consistent across both conspecific and congeneric comparisons.
