Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Advanced sporadic renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma: case report of an extraordinary response to sirolimus linked to TSC2 mutation

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2018
Background Renal epithelioid angiomyolipomas (EAML) are rare tumors with aggressive behavior. EAML can be sporadic or develop within the tuberous sclerosis complex syndrome, where mutations of TSC1 or TSC2 genes (critical negative regulators of mTOR ...

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Personalized medicine strategy for MPNSTs: using precision oncology on PDOX models to inform tumor boards

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine
Background Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are a heterogeneous group of aggressive soft tissue sarcomas with poor prognosis. Currently there is a lack of effective treatments for MPNSTs. Here, we propose a personalized medicine approach

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

New models for MPNST: establishment and comprehensive characterization of two tumor cell lines

open access: yesCancer Cell International
Background Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare, invasive, and aggressive soft tissue sarcomas arising from peripheral nerves. They may occur sporadically or in association with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), in which they are the ...

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Inherited mutations impair responses to environmental carcinogens: Cancer prevention in mutation carriers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Some environmental carcinogens may be responsible for a modest increase in the numbers of cancers after years of exposure. Economic or political factors weigh against widespread bans of carcinogens.
