Human Herpesvirus 8: Is it a Tumor Virus?

Proceedings of the Association of American Physicians, 1999
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV‐8), also termed Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus, was identified in Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) biopsy specimens in 1994. The epidemiological data available to date indicate a strong association of HHV‐8 with KS. It appears that HHV‐8 is necessary for KS development.

Is Human Herpesvirus-8 Transmitted by Transfusion?

Transfusion Medicine Reviews, 2010
Studies of human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) transmission through transfusion have produced contradictory results. In North America-a region with a low prevalence of HHV-8 infection-3 studies that tested specimens from linked positive-donor/negative-recipient pairs collected before the introduction of white blood cell (WBC) reduction and the extension of red

KAPOSI'S SARCOMA AND HUMAN HERPESVIRUS-8

Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, 1998
KS is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among AIDS patients and a treatment problem in the sporadic cases that are not associated with HIV. All four forms of the disease are linked to a newly described herpesvirus, HHV-8 or KSHV, via strong epidemiologic associations and biologic plausibility as a causal agent.

Human herpesvirus 8 and Kaposi's sarcoma

Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, 1997
In the last 2 years, the discovery that the suspected causative agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a new gamma-herpesvirus, called human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV8) or Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), has been followed by studies showing it to be a sine qua non of all clinical forms of KS and a specific marker for KS in the differential ...

Kaposi Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) or Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8)

2013
Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is a virus that is associated with the original AIDS-defining tumor, Kaposi sarcoma (KS). This virus is necessary for the development of KS. Expression of the viral protein, LANA, represents the definitive diagnostic marker for KS.

The Emergence of Kaposi's Sarcoma–Associated Herpesvirus (Human Herpesvirus 8)

New England Journal of Medicine, 2000
The concept of emerging “new” pathogens is somewhat misnamed, since these pathogens are usually old infections that have newly adapted to social and technological changes. Such is the case for Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus, also referred to as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), which was first described in 1994 and is the subject of two articles ...
