Unatoč dugoj tradiciji istraživanja vodozemaca i gmazova Hrvatske, otok Lokrum nikada nije bio sustavno istraživan. Štoviše, do sada je u literaturi za otok zabilježena samo jedna vrsta, veliki zelembać (Lacerta trilineata). Tijekom 2016. provedeno je prvo sustavno istraživanje faune vodozemaca i gmazova otoka Lokruma.
