The Herschel-Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) [PDF]

open access: yesEAS Publications Series, 2008
This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) to be launched onboard of ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, by 2008. The instrument is designed to be electronically tunable over a wide and continuous frequency range in the Far Infrared, with velocity resolutions better than 0.1 km s-1 and a high sensitivity.

Neptune’s HCl upper limit from Herschel/HIFI [PDF]

open access: yesIcarus, 2021
Abstract Here we search for hydrogen chloride (HCl) in Neptune’s stratosphere using observations of the 1876.22 GHz J=3–2 transition from the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on Herschel. Observations comprise a 7.2 hr disc-averaged integration, originally designed to investigate stratospheric methane.

In-orbit performance ofHerschel-HIFI [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2011
Aims. In this paper the calibration and in-orbit performance of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) is described.Methods. The calibration of HIFI is based on a combination of ground and in-flight tests. Dedicated ground tests to determine those instrument parameters that can only be measured accurately using controlled laboratory ...

Data processing pipeline forHerschelHIFI [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2017
Context. The HIFI instrument on theHerschelSpace Observatory performed over 9100 astronomical observations, almost 900 of which were calibration observations in the course of the nearly four-yearHerschelmission. The data from each observation had to be converted from raw telemetry into calibrated products and were included in theHerschelScience Archive ...

HERSCHEL /HIFI DISCOVERY OF HCL + IN THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2012
The radical ion HCI^+, a key intermediate in the chlorine chemistry of the interstellar gas, has been identified for the first time in the interstellar medium with the Herschel Space Observatory's Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared. The ground-state rotational transition of H^(35)CI^+, ^2Π_(3/2)J = 5/2-3/2, showing Λ-doubling and hyperfine ...

TheHerschel-Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2010
Aims. This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared ( HIFI) that was launched onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory in May 2009.Methods. The instrument is a set of 7 heterodyne receivers that are electronically tuneable, covering 480-1250 GHz with SIS mixers and the 1410-1910 GHz range with hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers ...

Herschel/HIFI deepens the circumstellar NH3enigma [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2010
Circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of a variety of evolved stars have been found to contain ammonia (NH3) in amounts that exceed predictions from conventional chemical models by many orders of magnitude. The observations reported here were performed in order to better constrain the NH3 abundance in the CSEs of four, quite diverse, oxygen-rich stars using ...
