H3K9me3-binding proteins are dispensable for SETDB1/H3K9me3-dependent retroviral silencing

open access: yesEpigenetics & Chromatin, 2011
Background Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are parasitic sequences whose derepression is associated with cancer and genomic instability. Many ERV families are silenced in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) via SETDB1-deposited trimethylated lysine 9 of ...

Noncanonical Nucleotides in the Genome Around the Maternal‐Zygotic Transition

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
In this paper, Kazzazi et al. provide a comprehensive review of the dynamics of nonconventional nucleotides in the genome during early developmental stages, hypothesizing a potential role for these nucleotides in the activation of the zygotic genome. ABSTRACT From the very moment of fertilization and throughout development, the cells of animal embryos ...

Repo-Man/PP1 regulates heterochromatin formation in interphase

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Repo-Man is a chromosome-binding subunit of protein phosphatase 1 to regulate mitosis. Here, de Castro and colleagues show that Repo-Man also regulates heterochromatin during interphase, and regulates gene repression and chromatin organization.

PAD4 mediated histone hypercitrullination induces heterochromatin decondensation and chromatin unfolding to form neutrophil extracellular trap-like structures

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2012
NETosis, the process wherein neutrophils release highly decondensed chromatin called neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), has gained much attention as an alternative means of killing bacteria.

Heterochromatin protein 1 regulates longevity and the mitochondrial unfolded protein response

open access: yes, 2021
Prohibitins (PHB-1 and PHB-2) form a large macromolecular structure at the mitochondrial inner membrane. PHB deficiency shortens the lifespan of wild type animals, but dramatically extends that of metabolically compromised animals, such as insulin/IGF-1 receptor (daf-2) mutants.

Molecular mechanisms of sex determination in Lepidoptera: current status and perspectives

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The genetic basis of sex determination in Lepidoptera was discovered in 2014 in the silkworm Bombyx mori. In this model species, the W chromosome‐derived small piRNA called Fem piRNA downregulates the expression of a Z‐linked gene, Masculinizer (Masc), which leads to the default female‐specific splicing of the doublesex gene (dsxF) and thus to female ...

Chromatin Regulation by HP1γ Contributes to Survival of 5-Azacytidine-Resistant Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2018
Recent investigations of the treatment for hematologic neoplasms have focused on targeting epigenetic regulators. The DNA methyltransferase inhibitor 5-azacytidine (AZA) has produced good results in the treatment of patients with myelodysplastic ...

Heterochromatin protein 1 promotes self-renewal and triggers regenerative proliferation in adult stem cells

open access: yesJournal of Cell Biology, 2013
The planarian chromatin regulator HP1, at least in part acting through increased expression of Mcm5, inhibits differentiation of adult stem cells and triggers their proliferation in response to injury.

Modified cytoskeletal and extracellular matrix composition in the canine testis after long‐acting gonadotropin‐releasing hormone agonist deslorelin treatment

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Long‐acting gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists are commonly used for fertility control in male dogs. Their effect on testicular histomorphology has not been clarified. Objectives To elucidate the mechanisms underlying androgen withdrawal in response to long‐acting GnRH agonist deslorelin 4.7 mg treatment on testicular ...

Epigenetic mechanisms and therapeutic innovations in chronic pain‐associated neuropsychiatric co‐morbidities

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic pain, marked by nociceptive sensitization and maladaptive neuroplasticity, affects 30% of the global population with escalating socioeconomic burdens. Epidemiological data show a 2‐3‐fold increase in neuropsychiatric co‐morbidities among individuals with chronic pain, where epigenetic dysregulation serves as a key mechanism linking ...
