Heterocyst development in Anabaena

Many filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria protect nitrogenase from oxygen in differentiated cells called heterocysts. Heterocyst development is controlled by the availability of nitrogen compounds in the environment and by intrinsic factors that regulate the frequency and pattern of heterocysts along vegetative cell filaments.

Heterocystous cyanobacteria grow as multicellular organisms with a distinct one-dimensional developmental pattern of single nitrogen-fixing heterocysts separated by approximately ten vegetative cells. WE have reported the isolation and partial characterization of a novel lipophilic glycoside which is apparently specific to nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae1. During these studies we noticed that a culture of Mastigocladus laminosus which had been grown in a medium containing ammonium salts synthesized no detectable quantities of the glycoside.
