Kinetics of bainite transformation in heterogeneous microstructures

Materials Letters, 2012
Abstract In classical models for microstructural evolution, the natural dispersion existing in the samples is often neglected. In this paper, we propose a general procedure that takes into account the distribution of austenite grain size on kinetics of bainite transformation in steels. Through this example and by comparison with experimental data, it

ModelingThree‐Dimensional Microstructure in Heterogeneous Media

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 2007
While it is now possible to image the three‐dimensional structure of soil using high‐resolution tomography, none of the techniques can simultaneously image the distribution of the resident soil microbes. This means that it is not possible to visualize soil microbes in their habitat.

Association of microstructure and electric heterogeneity in BiFeO3

Materials Chemistry and Physics, 2013
Abstract BiFeO 3 ceramics was synthesized by solid state reaction technique. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis was employed to investigate the phase formation and structure determination. Rietveld refinement of the diffracted data confirmed the rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure with space group R3c .

Heterogeneous Design Optimization From the Microstructure

Volume 1: 32nd Design Automation Conference, Parts A and B, 2006
Designers have for some time had powerful tools that allow optimization of geometric design using, for example, parametric design techniques. However, these optimization strategies utilize an incomplete model in the design process. An assumption often made throughout the design process is that the material properties are homogeneous.

Growth and microstructure of heterogeneous crystal GaSe:InS

CrystEngComm, 2013
An optical quality GaSe:InS single crystal has been grown by modified Bridgman technique using nonstationary temperature distribution for effective melt mixing. The phase composition of the crystal has been verified with XRD and TEM. The chemical composition variation along the crystal has been evaluated with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), atomic-

Introduction to market microstructure and heterogeneity of investors

International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi”, 2019
In this paper I review some of the recent advancements in the understanding of the market microstructure of financial markets and of the role of heterogenous investors in explaining the statistical regularities observed in market data. After introducing some of the main problems in microstructure and describing the most common structure of financial ...

Heterogeneous diffusion effects in polycrystalline microstructures

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1997
Diffusion in polycrystalline microstructures is influenced by two factors that are not considered in a simple continuum material description. These are kinetic effects, where the diffusivities of grain boundaries differ from those of the grains, and free-energy effects, where the driving force for diffusion is dependent on a free energy function that ...

Modelling Heterogeneous Microstructures, Inhomogeneous Deformation and Failure in Superplasticity

Materials Science Forum, 1998
A material model is presented for superplastic deformation, at the continuum level, that is coupled with the inhomogeneous microstructural evolution that occurs through normal grain growth and deformation enhanced growth. The model has been developed to enable finite element analyses at the process level, in which the evolution of experimentally ...

Theory of Microstructure Evolution in Heterogeneous Materials

MRS Proceedings, 1993
AbstractThis paper summarizes the main ingredients of a general theory for a quantitative description of dynamical processes in heterogeneous materials under stresses, thermal cycling, or current. The theory is derived analytically from the atomic scale using the principles of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, without any empirical ...

Swimming fluctuations of micro-organisms due to heterogeneous microstructure

Physical Review E, 2014
Swimming microorganisms in biological complex fluids may be greatly influenced by heterogeneous media and microstructure with length scales comparable to the organisms. A fundamental effect of swimming in a heterogeneous rather than homogeneous medium is that variations in local environments lead to swimming velocity fluctuations.
