Sampling Heterogeneous Networks

2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Data Mining, 2013
Online social networks are mainly characterized by large-scale and heterogeneous semantic relationships. Unfortunately, for online social network services such as Facebook or Twitter, it is very difficult to obtain the fully observed network without privilege to access the data internally.

Heterogeneous networking

IEEE Multimedia, 1997
The projects described in this article all deal with network heterogeneity in the context of distributing multimedia information via multicast transmission. Multicasting significantly improves the efficiency of network resource use in situations involving one-to-many or many-to-many communication.

Broadcasting in Heterogeneous Networks

Algorithmica, 2007
In this paper we study a well-known broadcasting heuristic for heterogeneous networks of workstations, called fastest node first. We show that this heuristic produces an optimal solution for minimizing the sum of all completion times and, in addition, produces a 1.5 approximation for the problem of minimizing the maximum completion time.

Coverage In Heterogeneous Sensor Networks

2006 4th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc and Wireless Networks, 2006
In this paper we study the problem of coverage in heterogeneous planar sensor networks. Coverage as a performance metric, quantifies the quality of monitoring provided by the sensor network. We formulate the problem of coverage as a set intersection problem arising in Integral Geometry, and derive analytical expressions for stochastic coverage.

CONTAGION IN HETEROGENEOUS FINANCIAL NETWORKS

Advances in Complex Systems, 2016
In this paper, we use the financial network contagion model of Gai P. and Kapadia S. [Contagion in financial networks, Proc. R. Soc. A 466 (2010) 2401–2423] to investigatethe interaction of several types of heterogeneity found in real world banking systems.

Online caching in heterogeneous networks

2017 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 2017
In this paper we propose a novel online caching method to perform the update phase in a distributed caching system, with a natural application to heterogeneous scenarios with cache-equipped small-cell base stations. We investigate the performance of our scheme, showing in particular that it results in a significant reduction of backhaul load, to the ...

Heterogeneous Networks of Workstations

2004
Parallel systems built from commodity CPUs and networking devices (Networks of Workstations or NoW) are easily and economically constructed. Rapid technological change means that as elements are added to or replaced in such a system, it will inevitably become heterogeneous.

Modularity for heterogeneous networks

Proceedings of the 21st ACM conference on Hypertext and hypermedia, 2010
Online social media such as delicious and digg are represented as tripartite networks whose vertices are users, tags, and resources. Detecting communities from such tripartite networks is practically important. Modularity is often used as the criteria for evaluating the goodness of network divisions into communities.

On the Potential of Heterogeneous Networks

2006
Many research work is going on in the domain of pure ad-hoc networking and even more issues are raised due to the missing central infrastructure to properly manage resources, guarantee fairness, and provide security features. On the other hand lot of research effort is spent to increase the performance of infrastructure-based access networks to cope ...

Quantifying network heterogeneity

Physical Review E, 2010
Despite degree distributions give some insights about how heterogeneous a network is, they fail in giving a unique quantitative characterization of network heterogeneity. This is particularly the case when several different distributions fit for the same network, when the number of data points is very scarce due to network size, or when we have to ...
