ABSTRACT The Orobanchaceae family, the largest group of parasitic plants, spans a complete spectrum from autotrophic to holoparasitic species. As a typical endangered holoparasitic species within this family, Cistanche deserticola is a parasitic plant that is widely harvested for traditional medicine in desertic regions, and of growing importance as a ...

Protists play key roles in aquatic food webs as primary producers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and symbionts. However, a comprehensive view of protist diversity in freshwaters has been challenged by the immense environmental heterogeneity among lakes ...

Ecosystem respiration: Drivers of daily variability and background respiration in lakes around the globe [PDF]
We assembled data from a global network of automated lake observatories to test hypotheses regarding the drivers of ecosystem metabolism. We estimated daily rates of respiration and gross primary production (GPP) for up to a full year in each lake, via ...

Topic Modeling of Fatty Acid Studies: Evaluating Environmental Changes in Freshwater Ecosystems
ABSTRACT Fatty acids (FAs) are biochemical molecules with vital structural and metabolic functions in all living organisms. Over the last decades, FA analysis in ecological studies has garnered significant attention due to its diverse applicability, such as taxonomic support for species identification, investigations on trophic interactions, and ...

Industrial scale-up of microalgal cultures is often a protracted step prone to culture collapse and the occurrence of unwanted contaminants. To solve this problem, a two-stage scale-up process was developed – heterotrophically Chlorella vulgaris cells ...

Exopolymeric substances (EPS) produced in the photic zone and surface sediments sequester calcium. Below the sediment surface, heterotrophic bacteria degrade EPS, releasing calcium resulting in carbonate precipitation. This process, which continues for millennia deep in the core, is an important sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Abstract The significant contribution of phytoplankton to global primary production is regulated by several abiotic and biotic factors, which are often difficult to account for in natural systems. To address these challenges, we perturbed a summer plankton community from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA, by manipulating the temperature and nutrient ...
