Optimizing Bus Driver Scheduling: A Set Covering Approach for Reducing Transportation Costs

open access: yesApplied System Innovation
Cutting operational costs is a critical component for transportation agencies. To reduce these costs, agencies must optimize their scheduling. Typically, the total operating costs of transport include vehicle expenses and driver wages. Solving such tasks

Robust regression with optimisation heuristics [PDF]

open access: yes
Linear regression is widely-used in finance. While the standard method to obtain parameter estimates, Least Squares, has very appealing theoretical and numerical properties, obtained estimates are often unstable in the presence of extreme observations ...

A Kinetic–Energetic Bottleneck of Charge‐Transfer Injection Governs Energy Loss in Organic Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Kinetic–energetic projection of time‐resolved photoluminescence reveals that charge‐transfer injection acts as a universal bottleneck in organic solar cells. A physics‐constrained Bayesian framework identifies an emergent effective CT injection rate governing the trade‐off between charge generation and nonradiative energy loss.

Hybrid Meta-Heuristics for Robust Scheduling

open access: yes
The production and delivery of rapidly perishable goods in distributed supply networks involves a number of tightly coupled decision and optimization problems regarding the just-in-time production scheduling and the routing of the delivery vehicles in ...

Why Didn't I Get a Payout? Understanding Farmer Choices, Index Insurance, and Basis Risk

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Index insurance, while heralded as a potential solution to alleviate poverty and food insecurity among agricultural households, has its own set of challenges, notably basis risk. Basis risk is the discrepancy between the insurance payout and losses incurred, posing a significant deterrent to the adoption of index insurance.

Heuristics for the Early/Tardy Scheduling Problem with Release Dates [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper we consider the single machine earliness/tardiness scheduling problem with di?erent release dates and no unforced idle time. We analyse the performance of several dispatch rules, a greedy procedure and a decision theory local search ...

30 years of the Journal of Heuristics: a bibliometric analysis

open access: yes
The Journal of Heuristics is an international journal that provides a forum to solve complex problems using heuristic solution tools. The journal was created in 1995, and in 2025, celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Monte Carlo hyper-heuristics for examination timetabling

open access: yes, 2010
Automating the neighbourhood selection process in an iterative approach that uses multiple heuristics is not a trivial task. Hyper-heuristics are search methodologies that not only aim to provide a general framework for solving problem instances at ...

Is Precision Agriculture Technology Adoption Persistently Overestimated?

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Precision agriculture is sometimes assumed to diffuse steadily over time, and industry planning frequently extrapolates early adoption trends forward. This study evaluates the accuracy of such expectations by comparing agricultural input dealers' forecasts of future service offerings with the actual levels of offerings that dealerships ...

Too Complex to Choose? The Role of Heuristics in Shaping Farmers' Willingness to Pay for Income Stabilization Tool in Italy

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT European agriculture is increasingly exposed to economic instability driven by extreme weather events, market volatility, and geopolitical tensions. To manage these growing risks, farmers are encouraged to adopt innovative risk management strategies such as the Income Stabilization Tool (IST), which offers protection against severe income ...
