Introduction: BEYOND HEVC [PDF]
The internet was not designed for the transportation of video content. However, over the past ten years, video traffic on the internet has increased dramatically, rising from one-third of all traffic in 2008 to roughly 82% in 2020. i This growth, in part, reflects the effects of the transition from analog to digital television broadcasting in 2009 ...

The new High Efficiency Video Coding Standard (HEVC) was finalized in January 2013. Compared to its predecessor H.264 / MPEG4-AVC, this new international standard is able to reduce the bitrate by 50% for the same subjective video quality. This paper investigates decoder optimizations that are needed to achieve HEVC real-time software decoding on a ...

This paper describes the in-loop deblocking filter used in the upcoming High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard to reduce visible artifacts at block boundaries. The deblocking filter performs detection of the artifacts at the coded block boundaries and attenuates them by applying a selected filter.

Model-independent rate control for intra-coding based on piecewise linear approximations [PDF]
This paper proposes a rate control (RC) algorithm for intra-coded sequences (I-frames) within the context of block-based predictive transform coding that departs from using trained models to approximate the rate-distortion (R-D) characteristics of the ...

HEVC extension for phase hologram compression
Compressing digital holograms have growing attention nowadays due to their huge amount of original data sizes. Although many progresses have been reported for full-complex holograms, the coding performance for phase-only holograms (POHs) has been quite limited so far. In this paper, we present a very efficient compression method for POHs.
