Rijkswaterstaat's interest in HF radar
IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 1986In this paper an explanation is given of Rijkswaterstaat's need for hydrological and meteorological information. The present means to gather this information are described together with their limitations. Future developments in the field of HF narrow-beam groundwave radar systems are indicated and some recommendations are given for the design of an ...

HF radar detection of tsunamis
Journal of Oceanography, 2006This paper demonstrates that HF radar systems can be used to detect tsunamis well before their arrival at a coastline. We solve the equations of motion and continuity on the ocean surface using models to simulate the signals produced by a tsunami approaching the east U.S. coast.

Abstract : Interference to communication reception near an HF radar is dependent on many factors. It is shown that the most important of these that can be controlled is the pulse shape of the radar. Under optimum conditions, acceptable reception should be possible with frequency separation as little as 21 kHz from the proposed radar.

Abstract This paper provides an overview of six poster presentations contributed to the Open Symposium on Active Experiments in Space Plasmas at the XXIst General Assembly of URSI. The six poster presentations deal with HF ionospheric modification and are primarily experimental in nature.

HF over-the-horizon radars often use CW transmissions comprising repeated linear FM sweeps. The resolution and sidelobe performance in the range dimension are determined within each sweep, but Doppler information is extracted by processing together the outputs of a number of sweeps.

HF radar groups working within separate organisations are likely to use different versions of the HF radar equation. When it is necessary to collaborate, or otherwise share know-how, there are fresh opportunities for misunderstanding. In this paper some alternative definitions of transmission loss, antenna gain and target backscattering cross-section ...

The development of a 26MHz pulsed Doppler radar system for remote sensing of ocean surface conditions is described. This radar obtains Doppler spectra of echoes from ocean waves within the range 10-40 km from the shore. From these Doppler spectra it is possible to estimate oceanographic parameters such as sea state, wind speed, wind direction, radial ...

HF surface wave radar simulation
IEE Colloquium on Radar System Modelling, 1998One of the aims of radar performance modelling is to assess a radar's capability to fulfil its intended mission. This may be achieved by the simulation of all aspects of the radar's operation including target behaviour, environmental conditions, radar characteristics, and the radar/operator interface.

Lagrangian coherent structures deduced from HF radar measurements
OCEANS 2015 - Genova, 2015In the present paper Lagrangian Coherent Structures are detected in the Gulf of Trieste, i.e., a Gulf located in the north-eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. Lagrangian Coherent Structures are usually detected through Lyapunov exponent diagnostic tools. However, such diagnostics lack of a rigorous mathematical background and try to associate well-known ...
