Chromosomally Integrated HHV-6
2014Herpesviruses are members of a diverse family of viruses that colonize all vertebrates from fish to mammals. Interestingly, certain oncogenic herpesviruses such as the Marek's disease virus can be found integrated at low frequencies in the host's chromosomes.

Blood, 2011
Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is recognized as a sporadic cause of encephalitis in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients. In this issue of Blood, Zerr and coworkers report on a 3.5-year prospective study of 315 patients undergoing allogeneic HCT. 1 Patients with HHV-6 were more likely to develop delirium and neurocognitive decline.

Journal of Virological Methods, 1988
Methods for the purification of enveloped HHV-6 virions and the viral DNA are presented. The viral genome is estimated to be 170,000 base pairs in size and does not appear to contain inversions due to absence of submolar bands by restriction enzyme analyses.

HHV-6 antigen and HHV-6 DNA expression in sporadic adenomatous polyps of the colon
Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 2013BACKGROUND. Human herpesvirus-6B (HHV-6B) antigens are commonly found in the intestinal mucosa of patients with immunosuppression. In a series of immunocompetent patients with adenomatous, polyp HHV-6B antigen expression from mucosal biopsies was more intense than in biopsies taken from patients receiving immunosuppressive drugs because of kidney ...

The paper by Soldan et al. provides further evidence of a link between human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and multiple sclerosis (MS). Serum from patients with relapsing and remitting MS had a greater incidence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) to an HHV-6 early viral antigen, p41/38, than normal serum or serum from patients with other neurological or inflammatory ...

HHV-6-positivity in diseases with demyelination
Journal of Clinical Virology, 2014The triggering agent of multiple sclerosis is still unknown and many viruses, including human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), are under suspicion. In earlier study we found patients who had HHV-6 reactive OCBs in their CSF. We wanted to investigate whether HHV-6 has an active role in diseases with demyelination. To analyze the HHV-6-reactive cases in detail and ...

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the body of knowledge accrued over the last two decades on the biology of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6). HHV-6 has a restricted range of susceptible species, essentially limited to humans and selected nonhuman primates.

Case of fatal encephalitis by HHV‐6 variant A
Journal of Medical Virology, 2001AbstractA fatal case is reported of encephalitis in an 85‐year‐old man caused by the human herpesvirus 6 variant A. The virological diagnosis was based on the findings of the virus variant genomic sequences both in the cerebrospinal fluid and serum of the patient. Moreover, virus replication in nervous tissue was suggested by a viral load higher in the

Viruses have long been suggested to be involved in the etiology of multiple sclerosis (MS). This suggestion is based on (1) epidemiological evidence of childhood exposure to infectious agents and increase in disease exacerbations with viral infection; (2) geographic association of disease susceptibility with evidence of MS clustering; (3) evidence that

HHV-6 and the Cardiovascular System
2006Publisher Summary This chapter reviews a case of an adult patient who developed fulminant myocarditis after steroid pulse therapy for acute hepatitis. This case provides further insights into the mechanisms of virus–myocardium–immune interactions. A person was referred to a hospital because of an exacerbation of fulminant myocarditis after undergoing
