HHV-8 is associated with a plasmablastic variant of Castleman disease that is linked to HHV-8–positive plasmablastic lymphoma

Blood, 2000
Castleman disease (CD) is a lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology that is associated with the development of secondary tumors, including B-cell lymphoma. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) (Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus) sequences have been described in some cases of multicentric Castleman disease (MCD).

Plasma HHV‐8 viral load in HHV‐8‐related lymphoproliferative disorders associated with HIV infection

Journal of Medical Virology, 2009
AbstractThis is a mono‐institutional analysis of the clinical features, immunological and virological findings, and prognostic factors of patients with HIV infection and HHV‐8‐lymphoproliferative disorders. Patients with Multicentric Castleman Disease and HHV‐8‐related lymphoma diagnosed and treated from April 1987 to June 2004 were included in the ...

HHV-8+, EBV+ Multicentric Plasmablastic Microlymphoma in an HIV+ Man: The Spectrum of HHV-8+ Lymphoproliferative Disorders Expands

American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 2007
Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) is associated with several distinct lymphoproliferative disorders: primary effusion lymphoma, multicentric Castleman disease (MCD), MCD-associated plasmablastic lymphoma and HHV-8+, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)+ germinotropic lymphoproliferative disorder.

HHV-8 associated lymphoma

Current Opinion in Oncology, 2022
Purpose of review The discovery of Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) / human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) led to recognition of primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) as a distinct lymphoproliferative disorder. Subsequently, two other types of lymphoma have been shown to be associated with HHV-8 : HHV-8 positive diffuse large B cell lymphoma

The role of HHV-8 in Kaposi's sarcoma

Seminars in Cancer Biology, 1999
The epidemiology of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) amongst North American and Northern European patients with AIDS suggests that an infectious agent other than HIV is involved in its pathogenesis. Several lines of evidence indicate that human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also termed Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus, is the sought after agent.

HHV-8 and multiple myeloma in the UK

The Lancet, 1997
Rettig and colleagues reported an association between HHV-8 and multiple myeloma. HHV-8 genomic sequences were detected by PCR in cultured bone-marrow stromal cells from 15 of 15 patients with multiple myeloma and from two of eight patients with monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance, but not from 26 controls.

Increasing Probability of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HHV-8 with Increasing Maternal Antibody Titer for HHV-8

New England Journal of Medicine, 1999
To the Editor: We reported previously on mother-to-child transmission of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in South Africa.1 Stored serum samples obtained from 107 women (60 were black, 24 white, 5 Asian, and 18 other) and 112 of their children between the ages of 6 months and 14 years (61 girls, 50 boys, and 1 unknown) were tested for HHV-8: 42 percent (8 ...

Quantitation of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV‐8) antibody in patients transfused with HHV‐8–seropositive blood

Transfusion, 2009
BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV‐8) is endemic in Uganda where seroprevalence is approximately 40%. In a previous study, Ugandan patients receiving blood transfusions had multiple serum specimens collected for 6 months after transfusion to monitor for HHV‐8 infection.

Salivary shedding of HHV-8 in people infected or not by human immunodeficiency virus 1.

Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 2011
BACKGROUND Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), the main agent involved in the etiopathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is primarily transmitted through sexual contact. The potential of saliva as a source of HHV-8 transmission remains unclear.

Absence of HHV‐8 DNA in hobnail hemangiomas

Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, 2002
Background:  Hobnail hemangioma (HH) is a rare subtype of hemangioma that shares the morphological feature of hobnail endothelia with retiform hemangioendothelioma (RHE) and has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of Kaposi sarcoma. Since DNA of the human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV‐8) has been detected in more than 90% of Karposi sarcomas and ...
