Polygala qii, a new species of Polygalaceae from limestone landform in Southern Hunan, China [PDF]
Polygala qii, a new species, is described and illustrated from limestone landform in southern Hunan, China. The new species resembles P. fallax and P. arillata in flower structure of the plants, but readily differs from the latter two in having erect and

Comparison of brain transcriptome of the greater horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) in active and torpid episodes. [PDF]
Hibernation is an energy-saving strategy which is widely adopted by heterothermic mammals to survive in the harsh environment. The greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) can hibernate for a long period in the hibernation season.

This study proposes an automated method to infer brown bear hair snare interactions by detecting bipedal behavior in camera‐trap images using a pose estimation model and a multilayer perceptron (MLP). A YOLO‐based model, fine‐tuned from humans and dogs to a custom dataset, achieved high performance (≈93% keypoint precision and ≈96% classification ...

Sympatric bat species can co‐exist and avoid interspecific competition via niche differentiation e.g. diet. Detecting dietary differences can be achieved by comparing dietary niches of sympatric and allopatric populations. If dietary overlap is higher in sympatry versus allopatry, co‐occurrence may be altering the dietary niche of the species.

Supplementary feeding for declining hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus populations is popular in Great Britain and has been suggested as an important factor in explaining higher densities in urban areas compared with rural ones. Occupancy modelling was used to test whether spatial variation in supplementary feeding, natural food, habitat, or predator ...

Using Near Infrared for Studying Lemming Subnival Behavior in the High Arctic
Despite the crucial role of lemming in the Arctic ecosystem, many aspects of its ecology are still unknown. The main challenge of studying lemming is that this rodent does not hibernate in winter and remains active under snow.

Wildlife in urban areas is often a source of conflict, yet relatively few efforts have been directed toward fostering coexistence in these human‐dominated landscapes. While previous research has focused on socio‐demographic factors influencing perceptions of wildlife, the role of specific animal traits in shaping acceptance remains underexplored.

An Easy-to-Implement Protocol for Preparing Postnatal Ventral Mesencephalic Cultures
Postnatally derived cultures of ventral mesencephalic neurons offer several crucial advantages over embryonic ventral mesencephalic cultures, including a higher content of TH-positive cells and the ability to derive cells from the substantia nigra, which
