This paper presents a new map specifically designed for robots operating in large environments and possibly in higher dimensions. We call this map the hierarchical atlas because it is a multilevel and multiresolution representation. For this paper, the hierarchical atlas has two levels: at the highest level there is a topological map that organizes the

Journal of Automated Reasoning, 1987
The main contribution of the paper is the goal-oriented hierarchical deduction proof procedure. The procedure proves a theorem by producing not just one but all the acceptable resolvents from the goal clause. There is a set of completeness-preserving refinements to constrain the generation of the irrelevant resolvents.

Narrowcasting, in analogy to uni-, broad-, and multicasting, is a formalization of media control functions that can be used to adjust exposure and receptiveness. Its idioms have been deployed in spatial sound diffusion interfaces, internet telephony, immersive chatspaces, and collaborative music audition systems.

Hierarchical and Non-Hierarchical Coordination
2018This chapter focuses on hierarchical and non-hierarchical (including deliberative) governance modes in areas of limited statehood (i.e. on the ‘how’ of governance). Actorhood and modes of governance are orthogonal to each other. State actors are involved in non-hierarchical governance and non-state actors—including violent ones—sometimes exercise ...

Hierarchical Representation of Waveforms
IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 1979Ehrich and Foith have proposed an approach to the hierarchical representation of waveforms based on peak dominance relations. This correspondence proposes an alternative approach, derived from concepts of fuzzy connectedness. It also discusses the possibility of extending this approach to the description of curves and of images.

A novel approach is described for the combination of unification algorithms for two equational theories E 1 and E 2 which share function symbols. We are able to identify a set of restrictions and a combination method such that if the restrictions are satisfied the method produces a unification algorithm for the union of non-disjoint equational theories.

Rich, interesting patterns create an oasis of aesthetic pleasure between the arid lands of complete randomness and complete order. In addition to their inherent beauty, patterns prove useful in graphics when we use them as textures. Textures were originally used to add color detail to shapes. Today, textures control everything from shape details to the

In this paper we motivate and formalise a framework that organises Dung argumentation frameworks into a hierarchy. Argumentation over preference information in a level n Dung framework is then used to resolve conflicts between arguments in a level n-1 framework.
