Aftasten/Tantear: A sensorial, coalitional wayfinding among Muslim runners

open access: yesFeminist Anthropology, EarlyView.
Abstract Muslim recreational runners in Muslim‐minority settings that take up running as their preferred form of leisure indicate that they feel they have to navigate a sense of exclusion when running outdoors. This article explores the process of exploration and sensing in public, represented by the Dutch verb aftasten, to investigate the way Muslim ...

Marine Macroalgae as a Safe Healthy Food While Meeting Food Security Challenges Arising From Climate Changes

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Planned harvesting and processing of marine macroalgae could meet future global food needs and mitigate fuel‐originated carbon dioxide responsible for climate change. Microalgal foods are nutritious and safe. The utilization of macroalgae would avoid environmental problems arising from the release of overgrowing macroalgae caused by heatwaves, which ...

Miocene to Quaternary Tectonostratigraphic Evolution of the Northern Section of the Burdur‐Fethiye Shear Zone, South‐Western Türkiye

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
New zircon ages reveal that lacustrine sedimentation initiated in the Late Miocene (Messinian), revising earlier Pliocene age assignments. The study results support the interpretation of the northern BFSZ as a broad left‐lateral transtensional shear zone rather than a discrete sinistral fault or simple extensional graben array.

A Comparison of Beach Nourishment Methodology and Performance at Two Fringing Reef Beaches in Waikiki (Hawaii, USA) and Cadiz (SW Spain)

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
Fringing reefs have significant impacts on beach dynamics, yet there is little research on how they should be considered in beach nourishment design, monitoring, and conservation works.

Simultaneous 3/4‐power scaling of leaf mass and 2/3‐power scaling of leaf area with stem mass in plants

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Plant allometry theory developed in the last century focused on 2/3‐power scaling, determined by light interception considerations. More recently, 3/4‐power scaling based on the properties of vascular distribution networks has been proposed.

Leveraging Laboratory Experiments of Shoreline Response to Sea‐Level Rise: A Beach Disequilibrium Perspective

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
This study analyzes laboratory data of beach response to sea‐level rise (SLR), isolating shoreline changes driven by passive flooding (PF) of the beach and consequent wave‐driven processes.

Heat, Health and Holidays: Reported Heat Related Adjustments to Australian Tourist Behaviour

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study assessed how climate‐related hazards affect Australian tourists' travel planning. While 80% of tourists report no impact, the 20% who do experience disruption most commonly change their activities, timing, or destination, with heat and rain affecting the same proportion of tourists across beach, city, nature, and family tourism types ...

Small‐Scale Topographic Variability Shapes Molecular Diversity of Organic Matter in Coastal Dune Soils

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
Topography shapes ecosystem controls, driving microclimate, hydrology, and vegetation, which, in turn, influence topsoil traits and DOM composition in coastal dune soils. Distinct molecular patterns emerge across north‐facing and south‐facing slopes and dune valleys.

Review of the Salpausselkä ice‐marginal formations in Finland

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Extensive Salpausselkä ice‐marginal formations were deposited in southern and eastern Finland during the Weichselian deglaciation. These comprise three major ridges (I, II, and III Salpausselkäs) and their eastern counterparts (Tuupovaara, Koitere, and Pielisjärvi), together forming laterally continuous ice‐marginal formations extending ...

Microbiology of a high energy beach sediment: evidence for an active and growing community

open access: yesMarine Ecology Progress Series, 1989
Microbial biomass, heterotrophic activity, and growth rates were measured in sandy sedirnents from 2 very different beaches in Nova Scotia, Canada: a protected beach inside Halifax Harbor (HH), and an exposed, high energy beach along the coast (LT). SEM of sand grains revealed that the microbial cells from HH were predominantly cocci whereas the cells ...
