Fabrication of nanograined silicon by high-pressure torsion

Journal of Materials Science, 2014
This paper describes fabrication of Si nanograins through allotropic phase transformation by concurrent application of high pressure and intense straining using high-pressure torsion (HPT). Single-crystalline Si(100) wafers were processed by HPT under a pressure of 24 GPa at room temperature.

A detailed model of high pressure torsion

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2017
Abstract High Pressure Torsion (HTP) is a popular physical simulator to produce ultra-fine grained materials. Existing solutions of HPT predict a zero deformation and grain refinement near its sample’s longitudinal axis. However, experimental observations confirm that this is not typically the case.

Application of High Pressure Torsion to Bulk Samples

Materials Science Forum, 2006
High pressure torsion (HPT) is a well-known procedure to impart severe plastic deformation (SPD) into metallic materials. It was reported that HPT produces grain sizes finer than those using other SPD processes such as equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). However, the application of HPT has been restricted to thin disk samples.

Ring-Constraint High-Pressure Torsion Process

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2016
In this study, a constraint ring around a workpiece was employed in order to develop back pressure in addition to a compressive die pressure in high-pressure torsion (HPT) process. The influence of the constraint ring during the HPT process was analyzed using the finite element method and experimental analyses.

High pressure torsion of amorphous Cu60Zr30Ti10 alloy

Journal of Applied Physics, 2008
High pressure torsion was applied to produce a disk-shaped specimen of Cu60Zr30Ti10 composition. The dependence of the morphology, microstructure, and thermal behavior on the applied shear strain was monitored by scanning and transmission electron microscopies, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and calorimetry.

Evaluating High‐Pressure Torsion Scale‐Up

Advanced Engineering Materials
Increasing sample dimensions in high‐pressure torsion (HPT) processing affects load and torque requirements, deformation distribution, and heating. Finite‐element modeling (FEM) and experiments are used to investigate the effect of technical parameters on the scaling up of HPT.
