Recovery and valorisation of energy from wastewater using a water source heat pump at the Glasgow Subway: potential for similar underground environments [PDF]
An installation of a Water Source Heat Hump (WSHP) at Glasgow’s Underground Station, has been using the subsurface wastewater ingress to heat the office at St. George’s Cross station.

This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Interaction of Ladle Slag With Varying SiO2 Content and Recyclate‐Based MgO–C Refractories
Ladle slags (CaO/Al2O3 = 1) with 1–20 wt% SiO2 were investigated in contact with industrial MgO–C refractories fabricated from fresh magnesia and 50 wt% recyclate. The sessile drop method at 1600°C reveals intensive gas formation, delayed slag infiltration in recyclate‐based samples, and, under high‐SiO2 slag, formation of a dense MgAl2O4‐rich ...

The performance of an ASHP system using waste air to recover heat energy in a subway system [PDF]
In this short communication, we demonstrate that the performance of a typical air source heat pump (ASHP), exploiting a relatively stable air temperature within a subway environment, is high, even during the peak heating months.

Production of MgO/TiC Composites From MgO‐C Recyclates Using Spark Plasma Sintering
Using the spark plasma sintering technique, MgO/TiC composites are manufactured from recycled MgO‐C refractories stemming from the steel production that were mixed with titanium powder. This article shows, how the size of the Ti grains and their distribution in the powder mixture affect the local carbon concentration in TiC.

High‐Temperature Heat Pumps for Industrial Use
AbstractCompared to heat pumps established in the building sector, high‐temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) suitable for industrial use still face challenges, not only from a mechanical engineering point of view but also regarding integration into existing processes. They need to supply larger amounts of heat at higher temperatures.
