Circuit breakers go high voltage
IEEE Power and Energy Magazine, 2009Over the last 50 years, high-voltage circuit breakers have become more reliable, more efficient, and more compact because the interrupting capability per break has been increased dramatically. These developments have not only produced major savings, but they have also had a massive impact on the layout of substations with respect to space requirements.

A Multiorifice Interrupter for High-Voltage Oil Circuit Breakers
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1943High-voltage oil circuit breakers for high-speed operation generally use some form of multibreak contact arrangement. These breakers perform satisfactorily but lack the simplicity of the conventional slower-speed two-break construction. The development of an unusually effective multi-orifice oil-flow interrupting unit now makes it possible to reduce ...

Acoustic diagnosis of high voltage circuit-breakers
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1992A noninvasive technique for assessing the condition of circuit breakers by considering the acoustic signals generated during nonenergized switching is described. Mechanical malfunction, wear, and other types of abnormal behavior can be detected as changes in this acoustic signature.

Flow Behavior in High-Voltage Circuit Breaker
IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2011Since several years, high-voltage circuit breakers (voltages of up to 800 kV) have been studied by the thermal plasma community to attain high level of reliability, good operating economy, and long intervals without maintenance. The studies are also related to gas substitution in order to replace SF6. This feature consists to study, by a numerical tool

High voltage oil circuit breakers
Electrical Engineering, 1932MECHANICAL maintenance of high voltage circuit breakers is of considerable importance to the successful operation of power systems. Experience obtained over a number of years has proved that in many ways existing equipment may be modernized and betterments provided by the operating engineer.

Worldwide Reliability Survey of High-Voltage Circuit Breakers
IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 1995CIGRE 13.06 Working Group has conducted two worldwide reliability surveys of the reliability of high-voltage circuit breakers of 63 kV and above. The first enquiry included 78000 breaker-years of "in-service data" from 102 companies in 22 countries during the years 1974 through 1977 and included all interrupting technologies.

Contact Erosion in High Voltage Circuit Breakers
2018 IEEE Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC), 2018During current interruption in the high voltage circuit breaker, the contacts are eroded due to high temperature in the arc zone. This may influence the lifetime of the breaker and even current interruption process. Although there are many parameters that influence contact erosion, the work presented in this paper focuses on the shape of the contact ...

Accelerated diagnostics of high-voltage circuit breakers
Russian Electrical Engineering, 2007Diagnostics of high-voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs) is considered on the basis of an analysis of digital records generated by a multichannel digital recorder. A technique of the accelerated control of HVCB characteristics in switching on/off modes without opening the breaker tanks is described.

Condition monitoring of high voltage circuit breakers
Proceedings of IEEE. AFRICON '96, 2002The advances made in microprocessor-based measuring equipment can be used to good effect to determine the condition of a circuit breaker. In essence a very effective condition monitoring tool is represented by a number of products that are now commercially available.

Arc Energy in High Voltage Circuit Breakers
Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, 2012This work is devoted to the study of the energy balance at the opening of an SF6 circuit breaker. A new model is proposed to simulate the thermal exchanges involved around the current zero as a function of time. The theoretical basis of this model consists of the coupling of the electric and thermal equations of the arc plasma, which takes into account
