Green tea attenuates cardiovascular remodeling and metabolic symptoms in high carbohydrate-fed rats

open access: yes, 2010
Excess carbohydrate in the diet may initiate a chronic state of oxidative stress exacerbating the clinical and biochemical symptoms of diet-induced type 2 diabetes, especially glucose intolerance, lipid abnormalities and cardiovascular complications ...

Glycogen supercompensation in skeletal muscle after cycling or running followed by a high carbohydrate intake the following days: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology
IntroductionBergström and Hultman demonstrated that exhaustive exercise depleting muscle glycogen followed by three days on a carbohydrate-rich diet resulted in a doubling of the glycogen content.

Oligosaccharides With Defined Glycosidic Bonds Shape Gut Microbial Succession and Metabolism Via Bond‐Specific Microbial Responders

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Oligosaccharides with defined glycosidic bonds drive divergent gut microbial succession and shape unique metabolic profiles. Absolute time‐series profiling with Bayesian generalized Lotka–Volterra modeling identifies bond‐specific microbial responders, while monoculture validation and metaproteomics reveal linkage‐matched transport and cleavage modules.

Rutin Attenuates Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis in High Carbohydrate-High Fat Diet-Fed Rats

open access: yes, 2011
Background and Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is frequently associated with the signs of metabolic syndrome, especially obesity, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance.

Highly‐Time‐Resolved Measurements of Tryptophan's Distribution and Homeostatic Regulation in Live, Intact Animals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using a novel, aptamer‐based biosensor, here we have performed 20‐s‐resolved, in situ measurements of plasma‐free tryptophan in the jugular veins of live rats (blue). This unprecedented time‐resolution provides insights into the regulation of tryptophan metabolism in live, intact animals.

Supramolecular Zinc–Polyphenol Coordination Assemblies Mitigate Colonic Inflammation by Regulating Mucosal Barrier and Microbiome

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A carrier‐free zinc‐coordinated polyphenol nanoplatform (ZnCA NPs) is designed as an “all‐in‐one” therapeutic strategy for intestinal inflammation. The ZnCA NPs exhibit enhanced colonic accumulation and broad‐spectrum reactive oxygen and nitrogen species scavenging.

Comparison of purple carrot juice and β-carotene in a high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rat model of the metabolic syndrome

open access: yes, 2010
Anthocyanins, phenolic acids and carotenoids are the predominant phytochemicals present in purple carrots. These phytochemicals could be useful in treatment of the metabolic syndrome since anthocyanins improve dyslipidaemia, glucose tolerance ...

Effects of alanine aminotransferase inhibition on the intermediary metabolism in Sparus aurata through dietary amino-oxyacetate supplementation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In liver, through the reaction catalysed by alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alanine becomes an effective precursor for gluconeogenesis. In the present study amino-oxyacetate (AOA) was used to evaluate its effect on liver ALT activity of the carnivorous ...

Gut Microbiota‐Derived Indole‐3‐Propionic Acid Alleviates Diabetic Osteoporosis Through Nrf2‐Mediated Ferroptosis Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Diabetes‐associated dysbiosis is accompanied by reduced Clostridium abundance, impaired microbial tryptophan metabolism, and lower circulating indole‐3‐propionic acid (IPA). Exogenous IPA improves trabecular microarchitecture and bone formation and restores Nrf2‐associated antioxidant signaling in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, limiting iron ...
