From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

High-entropy alloys

open access: yes, 2014
This book provides a complete review of the current state of the art in the field of high entropy alloys (HEA). The conventional approach to alloy design is to select one principal element and add elements to it in minor quantities in order to improve ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Tungsten Matrix Composite Reinforced with CoCrFeMnNi High-Entropy Alloy: Impact of Processing Routes on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties

open access: yesMetals, 2019
Tungsten heavy alloy composite was developed by using novel CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy as the binder/reinforcement phase. Elemental tungsten (W) powder and mechanically alloyed CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy were mixed gently in high energy ball mill ...

High entropy oxide (Co,Cu,Mg,Ni,Zn)O exhibits grain size dependent room temperature deformation

open access: yesMaterials Research Letters, 2023
Despite their vast composition space and promising properties, little is known about the fundamental mechanical behavior of high entropy oxides (HEOs). Here we provide experimental evidence of the nanoscale origin of room temperature deformation in (Co ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Solution combustion synthesis of high-entropy rare earth oxide Ce0.2La0.2Gd0.2Y0.2Lu0.2O1.6:Eu3+ phosphor with intense blue-light excitable red emission for solid-state lighting

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics
Red-light-emitting phosphors capable of being well excited with blue light are highly desirable in solid-state lighting. In this work, a novel Eu3+-activated high-entropy rare earth oxide Ce0.2La0.2Gd0.2Y0.2Lu0.2O1.6:xEu3+ (x = 4–16 mol%) phosphor was ...

Peripheral lysosomes recruit PLEKHG3 to focal adhesions and restrain protrusion dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proximity‐dependent labeling at the LAMTOR complex revealed the Rho GEF PLEKHG3 as a lysosome‐proximal protein directing the study toward the influence of lysosome positioning on actin dynamics and cell motility. We show that PLEKHG3 colocalizes with lysosomes at focal adhesion sites and observe that forced peripheral dispersion of lysosomes hinders ...

Influence of high-entropy solid-solution structures on the oxidation and ablation resistance of boride coatings

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics
Compared with single-component systems, high-entropy boride (HEB) coatings exhibit superior oxidation resistance and ablation performance, yet the role of the high-entropy solid solution remains unclear.
