Ground fault location identification for multiple drive high resistance grounding systems

2013 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, 2013
One of the more difficult problems to solve in industrial plants is to locate and eliminate a ground fault in High Resistance Grounding (HRG) system. This is because ground fault conditions in these systems do not draw enough current to reliably trip the ground fault current detector in the drive. This paper studied the ground fault identification (GFI)

Residual Magnetic Flux in High Resistance Grounding System

2019 5th International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology (ICEPE-ST), 2019
When transformer is being energized a large magnetizing inrush current flows depending upon the closing phase of circuit breakers and the residual magnetic flux in the iron core. One of the suppressing the magnetizing inrush current method is to control closing phase of the circuit breaker.

High-Resistance Ground Retrofits in Pulp and Paper Mills

IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 2001
The safety and reliability of low-voltage, high-resistance grounding (HRG) schemes have made them an excellent choice for applications in the pulp, paper and other process industries. As facilities shift toward this technology for reliability in low-voltage substations, retrofitting existing grounded systems becomes the focus of several critical ...

Protection for Arc High‐Resistance Grounding Faults in Active Distribution Networks With Low‐Resistance Grounding

IEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Active distribution networks with low‐resistance grounding face a significant challenge under the dual‐carbon strategy. When a single‐phase arcing high‐resistance grounding fault occurs, the resulting zero‐sequence current is weak and unstable. Consequently, existing protection schemes for such faults are rendered ineffective.

High Resistance Grounding Analysis Using Symmetrical Components

2019 IEEE PES/IAS PowerAfrica, 2019
This paper provides a perspective on high resistance grounding (HRG) using symmetrical components. The paper notes that with the use of modern micro-processor-based relaying and zero-sequence current transformers, directional ground relays can sense the zero-sequence capacitive ground fault current on an HRG or ungrounded system. It further presents an

Fault locating in ungrounded and high-resistance grounded systems

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2001
One of the most common and difficult problems to solve in industrial power systems is the location and elimination of the ground fault. Ground faults that occur in ungrounded and high-resistance grounded systems do not draw enough current to trigger circuit breaker or fuse operation, making them difficult to localize. Techniques currently used to track

Phase-Ground Fault Current Analysis and Protection of a High-Resistance Grounded Power System

2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2019
This article provides a closer look at a high resistance grounded (HRG) power system using symmetrical components. It addresses the industry confusion, “how system charging current direction reverses during phase-ground fault condition without reversal of system voltage that causes fault current flow.” It presents fault current phasor diagram that ...

Pullout Resistance of High-Voltage Strengthened Ground Anchors

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 1998
Pullout resistance of ground anchor models embedded in a marine sediment was tested after high-voltage treatment through electrically insulated electrode poles inserted in the soil. The effects of the applied voltage, insulation thickness, and electrode arrangement are evaluated through an experimental program.

Conversion of Ungrounded Systems to High-Resistance Grounding Systems

2006 IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference - Conference Record, 2006
An innovative method is proposed where charging current can be measured and grounding resistors sized without staging a fault. Overvoltages have caused damage to equipment and voltage transformer fuse blowing an ungrounded 4.8 kV delta distribution system.

Analysis of very-high-resistance grounding in high-voltage longwall power systems

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2001
The application of very sensitive ground-fault protection in underground coal mines was demonstrated in the early 1980s for low- and medium-voltage utilization circuits (less than 1 kV), but its commercial application did not occur until the advent of high-voltage utilization circuits on longwalls in the late 1980s.
