Nondestructive testing of concrete using highly nonlinear solitary waves
AbstractIn this article, we describe the capability of a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method at determining the strength of concrete surfaces. The method uses highly non-linear solitary waves (HNSWs) propagating inside a metamaterial in contact with the concrete to be tested.

Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves for the NDT of slender beams
Slender beams subjected to compressive load are common in civil engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may help preventing structural anomalies. In this article we describe the coupling mechanism between Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves (HNSWs) propagating along a granular system in contact with a beam subjected to thermal stress.

Highly nonlinear solitary waves in chains of cylindrical particles
We study the dynamic response of uniform gran- ularchainscomposedofshortcylindricalparticlesexcitedby animpulse.Theparticlesinthechainsarearrangedwiththeir axesorthogonaltothechain'saxis, andtheparticlesmaintain a constant relative orientation angle. We study the formation and propagation of solitary waves in the chains varying the orientation angle (α)

Interaction of highly nonlinear solitary waves with large plates
Due to geometric nonlinearity, stress waves of one-dimensional granular chains behave as highly nonlinear solitary waves. Those waves can support a high level of amplitude over a long distance and have an important engineering value for detecting structure properties. Deflection can be caused by the impact of a granular bead with large plates. Based on

Monitoring the hydration of cement using highly nonlinear solitary waves
In this paper we present a nondestructive evaluation technique based on the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) to monitor the hydration of cement. HNSWs are mechanical waves that can form and travel in highly nonlinear systems, such as one-dimensional chains of contacting spherical particles (i.e., granular crystals). In the present

Propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves in a curved granular chain
We assemble granular chains composed of spheres of uniform diameter in different curved configurations. We study the properties of highly nonlinear solitary waves traveling in the curved channels as a function of the curve angle and of the radius of curvature, using experiments and numerical simulations.

Experimental parametric analysis of an energy harvester based on highly nonlinear solitary waves
We investigate experimentally five different designs of an energy harvester based on mechanical vibration and highly nonlinear solitary waves. The harvester consists of a metamaterial formed by granular chains, an oscillator that taps the metamaterial, a solid in contact with the metamaterial, and a piezoelectric element glued to the solid.
