Settlement preferences of leeches (Clitellata: Hirudinida) for different artificial substrates [PDF]

open access: yesHydrobiologia, 2015
We examined the settlement preferences of leeches by analysing colonization patterns on artificial substrates. The intention was to check whether the type of material, texture and size of artificial substrates would influence the abundance of leeches.

Genomic diversity of the hirudin multigene family and its implications for antithrombotic and antitumor biotherapeutic design

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
Hirudin and hirudin-like factors constitute a paralogue-rich antithrombotic repertoire in medicinal leeches, yet no prior synthesis integrates their genomic content with clinical, anticancer and engineering outcomes within a single evidence framework ...

High Genetic Diversity of Hirudo verbana Carena, 1820 (Annelida: Hirudinea: Hirudinidae) in Romania Confirms That the Balkans Are Refugia Within Refugium

open access: yesDiversity
This study presents the first data on the distribution of the Mediterranean medicinal leech Hirudo verbana in Romania, as well as the first molecular characterization of the Romanian populations, using mitochondrial DNA markers.

HABITAT PREFERENCES AND VENTRAL COLOR VARIABILITY OF HIRUDO MEDICINALIS (CLITELLATA: HIRUDINIDA)

open access: yesEcologica Montenegrina, 2015
This study deals with the habitat preferences of medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus, 1758 in the Czech Republic, in a highly agriculturally used and fragmented landscape, and provides the detailed information about the ventral coloration of this species. The study was conducted in 2010–2011 at 11 out of total 15 localities of H. medicinalis in

Annelida, Hirudinida, Stibarobdella moorei (Oka, 1910): new distribution and host records [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2011
The present report is the northernmost capture of the piscicolid leech Stibarobdella moorei in the western South Atlantic Ocean. This is also the first time S. moorei is found associated to a batoid fish in the Brazilian coast, the eyespot skate Atlantoraja cyclophora.

TRANSITIONAL MORPHOLOGY IN HYBRIDS OF HIRUDO VERBANA AND H. ORIENTALIS (CLITELLATA, HIRUDINIDA)

open access: yesVestnik Zoologii, 2013
Abstract The aim of this research was to test the ability of hybridizing Hirudo orientalis S. Utevsky et Trontelj, 2005 and Hirudo verbana Carena, 1820. We obtained offspring from both species. The color pattern of all the hybrids was uniform and quite different from both the parents. The venter was similar to H. verbana.

Redescription and molecular characterization of Placobdella cryptobranchii (Johnson & Klemm, 1977) (Glossiphoniidae, Hirudinida)

open access: yesZooKeys, 2013
Placobdella cryptobranchii (Johnson & Klemm, 1977) was originally described from specimens collected from Ozark Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) from the North Fork of the White River in Missouri, U.S.A. Leeches collected during August 2009 to August 2011 from five localities in Missouri (including the type locality) facilitated a ...
