We aimed to conduct phylogenetic analyses of Encephalartos, a cycad genus endemic to Africa, using 3545 single‐copy nuclear genes extracted from transcriptome data, covering 64/65 of the recognized species, along with inference of divergence times using two secondary calibration points.

We present the most densely sampled phylogeny of Carex section Lupulinae to date (107 specimens) and describe herein a new cryptic species for science from the southern United States, which is locally abundant and found in well‐explored and densely populated areas. Combining DNA sequences with morphometric data obtained from 299 samples, we Demonstrate

Evolutionary correlates and consequences of sociality in feliform carnivorans
We take a phylogenetic comparative approach to investigate the evolutionary correlates of sociality in feliform (cat‐like) carnivores. We find that sociality evolved eight times in this group of mammals, and that it is associated with ecologies that facilitate group cohesion (e.g. diurnality and open habitats) and also that should reduce competition (e.

Historical biogeography of Mediterranean trout
Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2004Complete sequencing of the mitochondrial control region was used to describe phylogenetic relationships of brown trout populations (Salmo trutta) in the Mediterranean river basins of Iberia and to review the historical biogeography of trout from the Mediterranean regions.

Abstract Our aim in this chapter is to review briefly the history of biogeography from Linnaeus to Croizat. The following three chapters detail subsequent critical developments in cladistic biogeography. The geographic distribution of living things has intrigued biological theorists, especially systematists, since the fifteenth and ...

Historical biogeography, ecology and species richness
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2004Ecology and historical (phylogeny-based) biogeography have much to offer one another, but exchanges between these fields have been limited. Historical biogeography has become narrowly focused on using phylogenies to discover the history of geological connections among regions.

Evolution and historical biogeography
2023Abstract The origin and phylogeny of the Carnivora is inferred from fossils, their geological contexts, and genetic data. Modern estimates of divergence times of lineages employ both kinds of evidence. While the earliest eutherians pre-date the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, the major eutherian radiation followed the bolide impact on the

Historical Biogeography: Introduction to Methods
Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, 1995The five basic historical biogeographic methods are: dispersalism, phyloge netic biogeography, panbiogeography, cladistic biogeography, and parsimony analysis of endemicity. Dispersalism derives from the traditional concepts of center of origin and dispersal.

Historical biogeography, the natural science
TAXON, 20040 INTRODUCTION Twenty years ago we wrote a monograph on historical biogeography that was published in 1986 in the Oxford University Press Monograph Series on Biogeography (Humphries & Parenti, 1986). We summarized and interpreted the field of cladistic biogeography as it stood at the time for the undergraduate, graduate student and professional ...
