Simple Analysis of Historical Lime Mortars
Journal of Chemical Education, 2014A laboratory experiment is described in which a simple characterization of a historical lime mortar is made by the determination of its approximate composition by a gravimetric method. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are also used for the qualitative characterization of the lime mortar components.

Characterization of historic lime mortars
2006Historic lime mortars are an amalgam of natural and man-made materials. Thus, the study of lime mortars inherently requires interdisciplinary approaches. In an effort to evaluate the applicability of select analytical techniques typically utilized by geoscientists, fourteen samples of historic lime mortars are examined with transmitted polarized light ...

Static penetration test for historical masonry mortar
Construction and Building Materials, 2016The penetration test for historical masonry mortar presented in this study is based on the principle of "static" penetration. A pin is driven at constant velocity by a stepper motor controlled by a computer. The test result is the penetration load as a function of the penetration depth.

Investigation of the technology of historic mortars
Journal of Cultural Heritage, 2000Abstract Historical evidence on the use of mortars to meet several needs has existed for millennia. With reference to the characteristic historical periods of the city of Rhodes, mortar sampling was performed on historical constructions, masonry and architectural surfaces.

Historic Documents in Understanding and Evaluation of Historic Lime Mortars
2012Sophisticated analysing proceedings have been used in the past to assess the composition of hardened mortars. Chemical and mechanical tests combined with microscopic investigations seem to provide all the information required for the design of repair mortars which physically and visually are appropriate for restoration purposes. Lime putty and hydrated

Guidelines and Standards for Testing Historic Mortars
1996The restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse of existing structures increasingly are dominating the construction industry. The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings and many local historic preservation codes require that when exterior restoration work is being planned, original pointing and construction ...

Hydraulicity in Historic Lime Mortars: A Review
2012Natural hydraulic limes were used in ancient times and are still produced today. A comparison of the chemistry and mineralogy of currently available NHL2 and NHL5 limes indicate that there are no clear differences except for the amount of ‘undefined material’, mainly comprising an amorphous phase.

Characterisation of Historic Mortars for Conservation Diagnosis
2018Currently, several techniques are available for characterisation of mortar binders for research and conservation purposes but not all of them are suitable and affordable for routine diagnostic purposes. Cost efficiency is a very important factor for the scientific and conservation community and is always taken into account when designing a research ...

Creep, Shrinkage, and Mortars in Historic Preservation
Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1995Abstract The focus of this research is the theoretical application of laboratory statistics on creep and shrinkage in mortars to historic structures. By utilizing preexisting case studies, conclusions can be tentatively made as to how the tested mortar formulas should react in restoration projects.
