Acute Lyme neuroborreliosis with transient aphasia – Case report and review of current knowledge

open access: yesIDCases, 2022
Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a tick-borne infectious disease, endemic in the Northern hemisphere, with a polymorphic clinical spectrum (cutaneous, articular, and neurologic involvement).

North American liaisons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Not only are there strong cultural connections between Northern Ireland and North America, but much of the geology of Northern Ireland is related to its shared history with the eastern seaboard of Canada and the USA.

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Integrating population genetics to define conservation units from the core to the edge of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum western range

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
The greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) is among the most widespread bat species in Europe but it has experienced severe declines, especially in Northern Europe.

Population history of the Northern corn leaf blight fungal pathogen Setosphaeria turcica in Europe

open access: yes, 2020
Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) is a devastating fungal disease of maize and caused by the fungal pathogen Setosphaeria turcica. We show by sequencing of S. turcica isolates and evolutionary modeling that over the last 30 years different clonal, asexually reproducing lineages of the pathogen emerged and spread throughout Central and Western Europe ...

Detection of circulating tumor DNA in colorectal cancer patients using a methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed a cost‐effective methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex assay containing tissue‐conserved and tumor‐specific methylation markers. The assay can detect circulating tumor DNA with high accuracy in patients with localized and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Staying out in the cold: glacial refugia and mitochondrial DNA phylogeography in ancient European brown bears [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Models for the development of species distribution in Europe typically invoke restriction in three temperate Mediterranean refugia during glaciations, from where recolonization of central and northern Europe occurred.

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.

The geographic spread of the CCR5 Delta32 HIV-resistance allele.

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2005
The Delta32 mutation at the CCR5 locus is a well-studied example of natural selection acting in humans. The mutation is found principally in Europe and western Asia, with higher frequencies generally in the north.

Evolutionary history of Hypericum perforatum L. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The genus Hypericum is a highly diverse group of about 500 species. Among the Eurasian taxa, Hypericum perforatum L. and H. maculatum Crantz are representative examples with a largely overlapping distribution area in Central Europe.
