Developments in information technology and their implications for psychological research: Disruptive or diffusive change? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The notion of technology-induced disruptive change has generally been applied within academia to teaching and learning. Less explored is the disruption that occurs to research as mainstream technology develops.

Distinct Biotypes of Visual Perception in Major Depressive Disorder

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In a discover dataset (272 acute MDD patients), this work identifies a novel depression biotype characterized by impaired visual motion perception, using machine learning clustering. An independent dataset confirms the robustness of this biotype through cross‐validation and demonstrates its generalizability.

Becoming a parent in East Germany during the 1990s. The impact of personal considerations on the timing of entry to parenthood [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper deals with psychological determinants of fertility differentials in East Germany in the 1990s. We test the explanatory and statistical power of psychological covariates in an event-history model of first-birth intensities together with other ...

Paternal Caffeine Exposure Programs Offspring Stress Vulnerability via Sperm Dlk1‐Dio3 Imprinting‐Directed Remodeling of a Novel Neural Circuit

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study elucidates that paternal preconception stress can drive offspring hyperresponsivity of the stress system via hypomethylation of a specific DNA region in sperm. This key link is confirmed in a cohort of prospective fathers: the epigenetic alteration is associated with elevated stress hormone levels.

#Black Lives Matter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This short story begins with a reference to the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his killer as part of a pattern of behavior that shouts loud and clear: “black lives don’t matter”.

Inhibitory Decay and Supercritical Brain Dynamics During Sleep Deprivation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep deprivation progressively shifts human brain dynamics from near‐critical toward supercritical states, as revealed by neuronal avalanche analysis of resting‐state fMRI. These changes track subjective sleep pressure rather than vigilance lapses and show marked network heterogeneity. A circuit model suggests that reduced inhibitory efficacy provides

Neuromorphic Near‐Sensor and In‐Sensor Computing Enabled by Next‐Generation Material‐Based Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This Review presents a structural framework that classifies neuromorphic sensing into near‐sensor and in‐sensor architectures, clarifying physical coupling between sensing and computation. The framework connects neural and synaptic device functions with recent advances in optical, mechanical, and chemical sensing, compares energy consumption and ...
