Fourier’s heat conduction equation: History, influence, and connections

open access: yesProceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences, 1999
The equation describing the conduction of heat in solids has, over the past two centuries, proved to be a powerful tool for analyzing the dynamic motion of heat as well as for solving an enormous array of diffusion-type problems in physical sciences ...

Distributed Computing with Adaptive Heuristics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We use ideas from distributed computing to study dynamic environments in which computational nodes, or decision makers, follow adaptive heuristics (Hart 2005), i.e., simple and unsophisticated rules of behavior, e.g., repeatedly "best replying" to others'

Microglial dynamics and ferroptosis induction in human iPSC‐derived neuron–astrocyte–microglia tri‐cultures

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A tri‐culture of iPSC‐derived neurons, astrocytes, and microglia treated with ferroptosis inducers as an Induced ferroptosis model was characterized by scRNA‐seq, cell survival, and cytokine release assays. This analysis revealed diverse microglial transcriptomic changes, indicating that the system captures key aspects of the complex cellular ...

Untangling the role of social support in type 2 diabetes: insights from a mixed methods study in Quito, Ecuador

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
IntroductionType 2 diabetes (T2DM) requires sustained behavioral changes to achieve glycemic control (GC) and prevent complications. Social support (SS) is key for self-care in chronic conditions, yet its impact on GC in low-resource settings remains ...

The Enlightenment: A Beginner's Guide

open access: yes, 2010
Blamed for the bloody disasters of the 20th century: Auschwitz, the Gulags, globalisation, Islamic terrorism; heralded as the harbinger of reason, equality, and the end of arbitrary rule, the Enlightenment has been nothing if not divisive.

Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

[History of ideas, history of social sciences, and the sociology of knowledge].

open access: yesHistoria, ciencias, saude--Manguinhos, 2018
This article seeks to determine the mutual influence between the sociology of knowledge and the history of ideas within the history of the social sciences. In addition, it intends to outline a preliminary research program for the area in question which integrates relevant contributions from the social sciences and history to contribute to the dialog ...

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

Positivism as a Dis/Utopia and Alternative Scientific Approaches

open access: yesAnkara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Dergisi, 2018
Although positivism, based on linear progress and the idea that social development can only be achieved through scientific developments, put forward by Auguste Comte as a science movement against idols such as Baconian utopia, it has been argued that it ...

Identification of functional murine mitochondrial formyl peptides and their effects on myeloid‐derived suppressor cell generation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We first identified functional murine mitochondrial N‐formyl peptides (MT‐FPs) and investigated their effects on the in vitro myeloid‐derived suppressor cell (MDSC) generation from bone marrow cells. We demonstrated that MT‐FPs acted directly on bone marrow cells to promote MDSC generation and modulated the polymorphonuclear (PMN)‐MDSC/monocyte (M ...
