As for HIV-2...

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1988
THE AMERICAN RED CROSS does not plan to institute testing of blood donors for human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2). The virus is closely related to HIV-1 and was reported in 1986 to be associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in west Africa.

Evaluation of HIV-1/HIV-2 immunoblots for detection of HIV-2 antibodies

Clinical and Diagnostic Virology, 1995
To evaluate the sensitivity of commercially available HIV-2 immunoblots and to identify the HIV-2 glycoproteins on Western blots.HIV-2 Western blot (WB) strips commercially available from Diagnostic Biotechnology, Diagnostic Pasteur and Cambridge Biotech and in-house HIV-2 WB strips were investigated by monoclonal HIV-2 gp36 and gp125 antibodies for ...

Nucleotide Sequence of the HIV-2 EHO Genome, a Divergent HIV-2 Isolate

AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, 1995
The HIV-2 EHO isolate from Cote dIvoire has been characterized as a highly cytopathic HIV-2 strain which can be differentiated from other isolates by the smaller size of its external envelope glycoprotein. The entire nucleotide sequence (10352 bp) of the HIV-2 EHO genome is filed in the EMBL/Genbank Data Libraries under Accession No. U27200.

Current HIV‐2 diagnostic strategy overestimates HIV‐2 prevalence in China

Journal of Medical Virology, 2009
AbstractA significant number of HIV‐2 infections have been reported in China using Western blot as per current guidelines for HIV‐2 diagnosis in China. However, most specimens were also positive on HIV‐1 Western blot suggesting cross‐reactivity and possible overestimation.

Epidemiology and management of HIV-2

The Lancet HIV
HIV-2 remains a neglected component of the global HIV epidemic, predominantly affecting west Africa but also present in Europe and other regions through historical and migratory links. Although generally characterised by lower transmissibility and slower disease progression than HIV-1, HIV-2 poses distinct diagnostic, therapeutic, and programmatic ...

HIV-2 Infection and Chemokine Receptors Usage - Clues to Reduced Virulence of HIV-2

Current HIV Research, 2005
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and type 2 (HIV-2) are the causative agents of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Without therapeutic intervention, HIV-1 or HIV-2 infections in humans are characterized by a gradual and irreversible immunologic failure that ultimately leads to the onset of a severe immunodeficiency that constitutes ...

90-90-90 for HIV-2? Ending the HIV-2 epidemic by enhancing care and clinical management of patients infected with HIV-2

The Lancet HIV, 2018
Distinct from HIV-1 and often neglected in the global campaign to end the AIDS epidemic, HIV-2 presents unique and underappreciated challenges in diagnosis, clinical care, antiretroviral therapy (ART), and HIV programmatic management. Here, we review the epidemiology and natural history of HIV-2, diagnostics and algorithms for accurately diagnosing and

Antiretroviral Treatment of HIV-2 Infection

Future Virology, 2017
HIV-2 is a neglected virus despite estimates of 1-2 million people being infected worldwide. AIDS develops more slowly in HIV-2 than HIV-1. Outside endemic regions, HIV-2 is mostly found in immigrants from west Africa or their sex partners. There are four major caveats when treating HIV-2.

Epidemiology and transmission of HIV-2. Why there is no HIV-2 pandemic.

JAMA, 1993
Although human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and HIV-2 share modes of transmission, their epidemiologic characteristics differ and international spread of HIV-2 has been very limited. Recently, the prevalence of infection with HIV-1 but not HIV-2 has increased rapidly in different West African countries, where HIV-2 was probably present earlier.
