Abstract Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with daily tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine can reduce the risk of HIV infection by more than 90% for patients who are highly adherent. When considering PrEP, the first step is to determine the risk of HIV acquisition based on sexual risk behaviors during the past 6 months.
