Clinical presentation of abdominal tuberculosis in HIV seronegative adults [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology, 2005
AbstractBackgroundThe accurate diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis usually takes a long time and requires a high index of suspicion in clinic practice. Eighty-eight immune-competent patients with abdominal tuberculosis were grouped according to symptoms at presentation and followed prospectively in order to investigate the effect of symptomatic ...

Reduced capacity of antibodies from patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) group O to neutralize primary isolates of HIV-1 group M viruses [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Neutralizing antibody patterns in sera of persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) groups M and a to their homologous and heterologous primary isolates were determined in a peripheral blood mononuclear cell-based neutralization ...

Stewardship of Molecular Diagnostics in Transplant Viral Infections

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, Volume 28, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT The transplant environment requires special considerations when testing for viral infections as immunosuppression results in atypical infection profiles. Microbes otherwise considered commensals or causing mild disease can lead to severe infections in transplant environments. Therefore, guidelines tend to recommend broader microbial testing in

Successful Treatment of Posttransplant Refractory Pure Red Cell Aplasia Following Parvovirus B19 Infection

open access: yesCase Reports in Medicine, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), a rare cause of anemia limited to the erythroid lineage, is characterized by normocytic normochromic anemia, severe reticulocytopenia, and markedly reduced or absent erythroid precursors in the bone marrow. We report a 44‐year‐old male with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) secondary to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney ...

Reactivation of hepatitis B after liver transplantation: Current knowledge, molecular mechanisms and implications in management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a major global health problem affecting an estimated 350 million people with more than 786000 individuals dying annually due to complications, such as cirrhosis, liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Changes in renal function associated with oral emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate use for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis

open access: yesAIDS (London), 2014
Objective:Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) pre-exposure prophylaxis decreases sexual acquisition of HIV infection. We sought to evaluate the renal safety of TDF in HIV-uninfected persons.

Unrecognized Transmission Risks of Occult Hepatitis B Virus Infection Among Blood Donors in Central Ethiopia

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background Occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) refers to the detection of HBV DNA in blood or liver tissue in individuals who test negative for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), excluding the early phase of acute HBV infection. This hidden form of infection represents a substantial but frequently underestimated risk to blood transfusion safety,

Relating the outcome of HCV infection and different host SNP polymorphisms in a Majorcan population coinfected with HCV–HIV and treated with pegIFN-RBV [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, and the development of HCV-related disease is accelerated in individuals coinfected with human immunodeficiency-1 virus (HIV).

Functional Antigen‐Specific CD8 TSCM Responses Are Associated with Repeated Clearance of Hepatitis C Virus Infection

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 55, Issue 12, December 2025.
HCV re‐infection is common after spontaneous clearance of the initial infection. In the rare group of super‐clearers who clear repeatedly, HCV‐specific CD8+ T memory stem cells (TSCM) retain stemness, proliferation, and multipotency, sustaining immune protection. In contrast, clearer chronics lose these properties.
