THE ROLE OF HLA-B27 IN ARTHRITIS

Rheumatology, 1988
We postulate (Table I) that ReA is an antigen or immune complex induced condition caused by chronic intracellular bacterial infection at a distant site. The main predisposing factor is a failure to resist this infection. If the bacteria happen to carry MF, the inflammation is exacerbated in B27 positive patients.

Epidemiology of HLA-B27 and Arthritis

Clinical Rheumatology, 1996
HLA-B27 is present throughout Eurasia but is virtually absent among the genetically unmixed native populations of South America, Australia, and among equatorial and southern African Bantus and Sans (Bushmen). It has a very high prevalence among the native peoples of the circumpolar arctic and subarctic regions of Eurasia and North America, and in some ...

HLA‐B27 polymorphism in the Malays

Tissue Antigens, 2003
Abstract:  The frequency of HLA‐B27 and its subtypes was determined in 878 Malay subjects. Thirty‐five of the subjects typed for HLA‐A, ‐B and ‐DR were found to be positive for HLA‐B27. The frequency of this allele in the Malay population was found to be 3.99%.

HLA-B27 and Arthritis

1990
In 1973 two studies reported almost simultaneously the highly significant association between HLA-B27 (B27) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (Schlosstein 1973; Brewerton 1973a). In the former study 88% of the patients (all Caucasion) were B27 positive compared to only 8% of the controls. Across the Atlantic the results were similar.

Monoclonal Antibodies to HLA-B27

Rheumatology, 1983
Because HLA-B27 is such an important genetic marker for susceptibility to spondyloarthropathies and other related diseases, study of this alloantigen was undertaken using murine monoclonal antibodies. The first monoclonal anti-B27 antibody, B27M1, is an IgG2a lymphocytotoxic antibody that reacts with all B27 antigens and cross-reacts to a lesser degree

The Role of HLA-B27 in Spondyloarthritis

The Journal of Rheumatology, 2010
This article summarizes the proceedings of a one-day international workshop held in July 2009 on the role of HLA-B27 in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and related disorders. HLA-B27 is found in about 90% of patients with AS, with an odds ratio of about 100, but the mechanism underlying this association is not known. There are currently

HLA-B27 Associated Arthropathies

Radiology, 1978
The association between histo-compatibility antigens and disease is reviewed, in particular that between HLA-B27 and spondylitic disorders, i.e., ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing hyperostosis. We determined whether the presence of HLA-B27 predicted specific radiographic findings and, conversely, whether ...

HLA-B27 and the pathogenesis of spondyloarthropathies

Immunology Letters, 2007
The association of HLA-B27 with ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton, and other spondyloarthropathies, is among the strongest of an MHC antigen and any disease. Yet, the basis for this association remains unknown.

Outcomes of HLA-B27-Positive and HLA-B27-Negative Acute Anterior Uveitis

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1995
Outcomes of HLA-B27-positive and HLA-B27-negative acute anterior uveitis were assessed after a mean follow-up of nine years. Rheumatologic complications, in particular the presence and course of ankylosing spondylitis, were examined during the same period.A hospital-based prospective study of 119 patients with HLA-B27-positive and 35 patients with HLA ...

HLA-B27: To Type or Not to Type?

Annals of Internal Medicine, 1980
The association between the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 and the seronegative spondylarthritides such as ankylosing spondylitis and Reiter's syndrome is dramatic. A question that arises in practice is, when should a clinician request HLA-B27 typing in the assessment of a patient with a rheumatologic complaint?
