Helimagnetic thin films: surface reconstruction, surface spin-waves and magnetization

open access: yes, 2015
Quantum properties of a helimagnetic thin film of simple cubic lattice with Heisenberg spin model are studied using the Green's function method. We find that the spin configuration across the film is strongly non uniform.

Industrial strategies to minimize glycerol formation in ethanol fermentation by conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Industrial ethanol production faces the challenge of balancing metabolic efficiency with the minimization of byproducts such as glycerol, whose formation is intensified by osmotic, thermal, oxidative, and nutritional stresses. In the literature, two main approaches stand out for modulating its synthesis: the use of genetically modified strains

An Automated Face Detection and Recognition for Class Attendance

open access: yesJOIV: International Journal on Informatics Visualization
Class attendance is a crucial indicator of students' seriousness towards learning. Many institutions continue to use manual methods, which are usually error-prone and unproductive.

Study of the Ubiquitous Hog Farm System Using Wireless Sensor Networks for Environmental Monitoring and Facilities Control

open access: yesSensors, 2010
Many hog farmers are now suffering from high pig mortality rates due to various wasting diseases and increased breeding costs, etc. It is therefore necessary for hog farms to implement systematic and scientific pig production technology to increase ...

An evolutionarily stable strategy and the critical point of hog futures trading entities based on replicator dynamic theory: 2006-2015 data for China's 22 provinces. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Although frequent fluctuations in domestic hog prices seriously affect the stability and robustness of the hog supply chain, hog futures (an effective hedging instrument) have not been listed in China.

Reading hominin life history in fossil bones and teeth: methods to test hypotheses regarding its evolution

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Human life history is derived compared to that of our closest living relatives, the great apes. It has been suggested that these derived traits are causally related to aspects of our ecology, social behaviour and cognitive abilities. However, resolving this requires that we know the evolutionary trajectory of our distinctive pattern of growth,

Roots in 3-manifold topology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Let C be some class of objects equipped with a set of simplifying moves. When we apply these to a given object M in C as long as possible, we get a root of M. Our main result is that under certain conditions the root of any object exists and is unique.

Asymptotic independence in more than two dimensions and its implications on risk management

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract In extreme value theory, the presence of asymptotic independence signifies that joint extreme events across multiple variables are unlikely. Although well understood in a bivariate context, the concept remains relatively unexplored when addressing the nuances of simultaneous occurrence of extremes in higher dimensions.

Loss prevention for hog farmers: Insurance, on-farm biosecurity practices, and vaccination [PDF]

open access: yes
Using agricultural household survey data and claim records from insurers for the year 2009, this paper analyzes hog producers' choice of means of loss prevention and identifies the relationships among biosecurity practices, vaccination, and hog insurance.

Co‐Occurring Weight‐ and/or Shape‐Motivated Restriction in 5747 Adults With Probable Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder

open access: yesInternational Journal of Eating Disorders, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective According to DSM‐5‐TR, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) cannot be diagnosed alongside anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or any other body image disturbance. This does not accurately reflect real‐world symptomatology and recent research, indicating the potential need to revise DSM‐5‐TR Criteria.
