Dumb holes: analogues for black holes

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2008
The use of sonic analogues to black and white holes, called dumb or deaf holes, to understand the particle production by black holes is reviewed. The results suggest that the black hole particle production is a low-frequency and low-wavenumber process.

The hole truth

Science, 2021
Now that black holes can be studied directly, scientists wonder whether they really are the strange beasts Albert Einstein's theory predicts.

A hole in the heart: a hole in the head?

Archives of Disease in Childhood, 2011
A physiological left-to-right shunt through a patent foramen ovale (PFO) can be demonstrated in 32–55% of young adults with unexplained stroke compared with 10–35% of the general population.1 Transoesophageal or transthoracic echocardiographic evidence of a PFO consists of demonstration of a defect in the wall between the atria and ideally the passage ...

From Black Holes to White Holes: A Hole or a Gateway

This paper explores the theoretical connection between black holes and white holes, proposing that black holes may serve as gateways to other cosmic structures. The study focuses on the implications of general relativity and the potential existence of white holes in the ...

Black Holes

2009
Abstract A black hole is an object that is inside its event horizon at r=r*: a one-way surface that particles and light can only traverse inward. This chapter studies the spherically symmetric nonrotating Schwarzschild black hole. The metric elements change their respective signs when crossing from r>r∗ to r<r*, leading to ...
