The first optical-frequency hollow waveguides were simple parallel-plate guides. The early pioneering work in this field was done by Garmire et al. Her group made a rectangular waveguide using aluminum strips separated by about 0.5 mm with bronze shim stock. This structure is shown in Fig. 3.2. Even when the aluminum was not well polished, these guides

Fiber Fuse Effect in Hollow Core Optical Fibers
2019 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe & European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/Europe-EQEC), 2019Fiber fuse effect (FFE) is one of phenomena restricting the high power/intensity/pulse energy laser radiation transport through optical fibers. FFE (alternatively, optical discharge (OD) propagation through fiber core) was initially observed in solid state silica fibers [1], and later in fibers of various materials and constructions, including ...

Revolver Hollow-Core Fibers and Raman Fiber Lasers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2018Hollow-core silica fiber with optical losses of ∼1 dB/m at the wavelength of 4.4 μm is demonstrated. Based on this revolver fiber 4.4-μm fiber Raman laser is realized with output average power of 250 mW and quantum conversion efficiency as high as 36 %.

Anti-Resonant Hollow Core Fibers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2019, 2019Hollow core fibers based on anti-resonant confinement have demonstrated attractive properties including ultrashort pulse delivery, low attenuation at mid-infrared wavelengths, and damage-free delivery of light in the ultraviolet. Their potential for future development is discussed.

Anti-Resonant Hollow-Core Fibers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2025Discovered by accident and initially only a tool for physicists, antiresonant hollow core fibers have recently achieved performances attracting the attention of optical communications. We will review their key properties and highlight their potential uses.
