Holothurians as a Model System to Study Regeneration

Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation, 2018
Echinoderms possess an incredible regenerative capacity. Within this phylum, holothurians, better known as sea cucumbers, can regenerate most of their internal and external organs. While regeneration has been studied in several species, the most recent and extensive studies have been done in the species Holothuria glaberrima, the focus of most of our ...

A modified CTAB method for high-molecular-weight DNA preparation from deep-sea holothurians

open access: yesMarine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology, 2023
With the features as global distribution and all depths dwelling, holothurians function an ideal model for the study of deep-sea adaptation. Acquisition of high-molecular-weight DNA is the basic requirement for molecular biology analyses.

β-diversity of deep-sea holothurians and asteroids along a bathymetric gradient (NE Atlantic) [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Ecology - Progress Series, 2014
Measuring and understanding patterns of ?-diversity remain major challenges in community ecology. Recently, ?-diversity has been shown to consist of 2 distinct components: (1) spatial turnover and (2) species loss leading to nestedness.

Is there a link between the type of habitat and the patterns of abundance of holothurians in shallow rocky reefs?

open access: yesHydrobiologia, 2006
The presence of a mosaic of habitats, largely determined by sea urchin grazing, across\nshallow rocky reefs may potentially influence in differences in the distribution patterns\nof invertebrates.

On the occurrence of vanadium in holothurians

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1962
Abstract Vanadium analyses on nine species of holothurians, representing five genera, and including three species of Stichopus , failed to confirm the report of Phillips (1918) of a high concentration of vanadium in holothurians. Vanadium was found only in traces, 12 p.p.m. of dry weight, in the viscera and body fluids of Stichopus japonicus .

Muscle regeneration in holothurians

Microscopy Research and Technique, 2001
AbstractThe muscle system of holothurians includes visceral (coelomic epithelium) and somatic (longitudinal muscle bands, retractors of aquapharyngeal complex) musculature. Visceral musculature regeneration is achieved by the transformation of myoepithelial cells via their dedifferentiation, migration, proliferation, and redifferentiation.
