Cold Seep Communities in the Sea of Japan Are Species‐Poor and Dominated by a New Species of Provannid Snail

open access: yesJournal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The Sea of Japan is a semi‐enclosed marginal sea in the northwestern Pacific whose bathyal communities exhibit a depauperate species diversity due to anoxic events during the last glacial maximum. Cold seeps associated with chemosynthetic ecosystems were discovered in this region over three decades ago, yet their fauna have not been characterised. Here,

Bioaccumulation and Depuration of Emamectin Benzoate and Oxytetracycline in the European Black Sea Cucumber (Holothuria forskali): Implications for Aquaculture Integration

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 6, December 2025.
European black sea cucumber (Holothuria forskali) used in bioaccumulation and depuration trials after ingesting salmon pellets treated with veterinary therapeutants emamectin benzoate and oxytetracycline. The study provides the first kinetic data for these veterinary residues in this species, supporting responsible integration of deposit‐feeders into ...

Holothurians – potential biomonitors for metal levels in deep-sea sediments

open access: yes, 1997
Levels of cadmium, copper, aluminium, iron, manganese and zinc (Cd, Cu, Al, Fe, Mn and Zn) in deep-sea sediments and sediment-feeding holothurians are reported. Profiles of metals were found to vary with depth in the sediment.

The effect of diet on the growth and energy budget of juvenile Neostichopus grammatus

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 59, Issue 5, Page 1235-1251, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Providing optimum energy levels in diets for sea cucumbers is essential, as an excess or inadequate energy level can lead to a reduced growth rate. This study investigated the effect of diets on the growth and energy budget of juvenile sea cucumber Neostichopus grammatus for twelve weeks.

Population trends of remote invertebrate resources in a marine reserve: Trochus and holothurians at Ashmore Reef [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Marine protected areas (MPAs) have a high capacity to protect fish and invertebrate resources, given adequate surveillance and enforcement. Ashmore Reef National Nature Reserve (Ashmore Reef) was closed to commercial fishing and harvesting of ...

Progress in the Studies of Triterpene Glycosides From Sea Cucumbers (Holothuroidea, Echinodermata) Between 2017 and 2021

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2021
Structural diversity of triterpene glycosides produced by sea cucumbers or holothurians (Holothuroidea, Echinodermata) is extremely high, although all of them are either lanostane derivatives or, rarely, products of their molecular rearrangements.

Biological surveys reveal unexpectedly high faunal diversity at Nankai Trough methane seeps

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract Cold seeps are chemosynthesis‐based ecosystems powered by microbial primary production that support diverse and specialized faunal assemblages in the deep sea. Despite Nankai Trough in Japan being a geologically active margin hosting numerous seeps, much of the faunal diversity remains undocumented.

A Quorum-Sensing Inhibitor Strain of Vibrio alginolyticus Blocks Qs-Controlled Phenotypes in Chromobacterium violaceum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2019
The cell density-dependent mechanism, quorum sensing (QS), regulates the expression of virulence factors. Its inhibition has been proposed as a promising new strategy to prevent bacterial pathogenicity.

Jurassic jeopardy—life and death on an ancient seafloor

open access: yesGeology Today, Volume 41, Issue 6, Page 244-250, November/December 2025.
The Lower Jurassic Down Cliff Sand Member of the Dorset coast, southern England, is a rich source of marine invertebrate fossils. Among these are echinoderms and less common arthropods. Despite having multi‐component skeletons that are prone to disarticulation, remains of some of these are remarkably complete.
