Behavioral thermoregulation and activity in Homarus americanus
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1979Abstract 1. 1. American lobsters thermoregulated precisely for 6 days in an electronic shuttlebox (mode 16°C; range 15–21°C), with no significant difference in mean preferred temperature between night (17.1°C ± 0.15 SE) and day (17.2°C ± 0.18 SE), although mean hourly activity was 1.3 times as great at night as during the day. 2. 2.

Amino acid receptors in the antennules of Homarus americanus
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1972Abstract 1. 1. Electrophysiological techniques were utilized to establish the presence of amino acid sensitive chemoreceptors in lateral antennular filaments of Homarus americanus . 2. 2. Prolonged discharge is implicated as a possible mechanism of peripheral discrimination of specific amino acids.

Effects of temperature on phagocytosis in Homarus americanus
Aquaculture, 1978Abstract Phagocytosis constitutes the primary defense mechanism in decapod crustaceans. In this study, monolayers of hemocytes of the American lobster, Homarus americanus , were allowed to phagocytize a strain of Aerococcus viridans . This system was used to investigate the effects of temperature on in vitro phagocytosis.

Lobster (Homarus americanus) striated muscle myosin
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 19771. Myosin from the thin-filament regulated flexor muscle of lobster contains 2 moles of each of 2 light chains. 2. The Lb 1 light chain of 19,000 daltons which can be removed by DTNB is heavier than the DTNB light chain of chicken. The Lb 2 light chain of 17,000 daltons can be removed with urea. 3. On electrophoresis in 8 M urea (pH 8.7) the Lb 2 light

A BICOLORED GYNANDROMORPH OF THE LOBSTER, HOMARUS AMERICANUS
The Biological Bulletin, 1959Lobsters with sharply defined, bilateral color differentiation have been described by several authors. Herrick (18%) mentioned the following variations of this pattern in both the American and the European lobster: half normal color and half light sky blue; half normal and half pale red; half greenish black and half light orange; half blue and half ...

Copper transport by lobster (Homarus americanus) hepatopancreatic lysosomes
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2003Lysosomes are known centers for sequestration of calcium and a variety of heavy metals in many invertebrate tissues, and as a result of this compartmentalization these organelles perform important detoxification roles in the animals involved. The present investigation uses a centrifugation method to isolate and purify hepatopancreatic lysosomes from ...

Mixed function oxidases and nitroreductases in hepatopancreas of homarus americanus
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 1976Abstract 1. The oxidase activity of the hepatopancreas subcellular fractions was tested using ethylmorphine, biphenyl and aniline substrates. Only aniline was oxidatively hydroxylated. 2. The oxidase activity resided in the soluble fraction, required NADPH and oxygen, and proceeded faster at 20° than 37°C. 3. p-Nitrobenzoic acid was readily reduced

Occurrence of cytochrome P-450 in hepatopancreas of Homarus americanus
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1974Abstract 1. 1. Cytochrome P-450 was detected in the hepatopancreas of Homarus americanus. 2. 2. The cytochrome was identified (a) by the characteristic 450 nm spectral peak of its carbon monoxide complex; (b) by conversion to the P-420 form on treatment with potassium thiocyanate; and (c) by giving characteristic type I spectra when ...

Increased aggressiveness in gravid American lobsters, Homarus americanus
Aggressive Behavior, 1999Reports in the literature suggest that gravid female lobsters (Homarus americanus) are more aggressive than non-gravid female lobsters. In an earlier study [Cromarty SI et al. 1998. Biol Bull 194:63–71], we showed that, with one exception, gravid females did not respond to an unfamiliar stimulus with escape swimming.

Fine Structure of the Blood Cells of the Lobster, Homarus americanus
Chesapeake Science, 1967A light and electron micriscopic study was made of the blood cells of the Maine lobster,Homarus americanus. Observations based on cell shape and staining properties indicated three cell types: eosinophil, ovoid basophil, and spindular basophil.
