Homing Behavior: Decisions, Dominance and Democracy [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2006
When flying in pairs, pigeons with different preferred paths back to the loft often agree on a joint route, and in doing so get home faster than either would have done on its own.

USP29‐regulated noncanonical stabilization of the hypoxia‐inducible factor‐α in aggressive prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We identify USP29 as the only DUB mirroring CA9 expression, a marker of hypoxia and HIF pathway activation associated with PCA aggressiveness. USP29 stabilizes HIF‐1α and HIF‐2α via a noncanonical mechanism that is independent of PHD/pVHL activity yet relies on proteasomal regulation, establishing USP29 as a previously unrecognized regulator of hypoxic

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

SVOD Multi-Homing Users in Six Countries: Analyzing Legacy Media Usage, Demographics, Lifestyle, Expectations, and Usage Habits

open access: yesSAGE Open
Subscription to multiple subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services, known as multi-homing, is increasingly prevalent. This research explores the relationship between multi-homing and traditional media consumption and identifies the key factors that ...

Home Values and Firm Behavior

open access: yesAmerican Economic Review, 2020
The homes of firm owners are an important source of finance for ongoing businesses. We use UK microdata to show that a £1 increase in the value of the homes of a firm’s directors increases the firm’s investment by £0.03. This effect is concentrated among firms whose directors’ homes are valuable relative to the firm’s assets, that are financially ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Targeting of CXCR3 improves anti-myeloma efficacy of adoptively transferred activated natural killer cells

open access: yesJournal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, 2019
Background The peculiar multiple myeloma microenvironment, characterized by up-regulated levels of several inflammatory chemokines, including the CXCR3 receptor ligands CXCL9 and CXCL10, limits NK cell positioning into the bone marrow by interfering with

Survey of Pandemic Behavior: to Stay at Home or Not

open access: yesJournal of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases, 2008
Preparedness plans for pandemic flu are published in many countries. Since the details of pandemic flu are still not clear, mathematical models are widely used for the development of pandemic flu preparedness plans. Obtaining actual numbers for parameters in a mathematic model is very difficult.
