Chlamydia species in free-living Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) and Hoopoe (Upupa epops) in Egypt
Little information is available on the presence of chlamydia infection in wildlife. This study was conducted to assess the occurrence of chlamydiae in asymptomatic birds from two species of wild birds (Cattle Egret and Hoopoe) in Egypt.

Year-round tracking of small trans-Saharan migrants using light-level geolocators. [PDF]
Since 1899 ringing (or banding) remained the most important source of information about migration routes, stopover sites and wintering grounds for birds that are too small to carry satellite-based tracking systems. Despite the large quantity of migrating

Threshold Responses of Bird Communities to Human Footprint: Testing the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis and Implications for Biodiversity Conservation. [PDF]
Human activities, quantified by the Human Footprint Index (HFP), drive biodiversity declines, with birds serving as sensitive indicators of ecosystem health. In northeastern Inner Mongolia, Threshold Indicator Taxa Analysis (TITAN) identified a community composition shift at HFP ≈ 14, with species‐specific thresholds ranging from 3.37 to 43.22 ...

Population expansion of the Hoopoe Upupa epops in Silesia, SW Poland
A total of 258 breeding pairs of the Hoopoe were recorded in Silesia (c. 42,000 km2), SW Poland, during the years 2004- 2008. This is almost twice more than during the years 1978-1987 (136 pairs). This increase was rather unexpected.

Massive nest-box supplementation boosts fecundity, survival and even immigration without altering mating and reproductive behaviour in a rapidly recovered bird population. [PDF]
Habitat restoration measures may result in artificially high breeding density, for instance when nest-boxes saturate the environment, which can negatively impact species' demography.

Preening as a Vehicle for Key Bacteria in Hoopoes [PDF]
Oily secretions produced in the uropygial gland of incubating female hoopoes contain antimicrobial-producing bacteria that prevent feathers from degradation and eggs from pathogenic infection. Using the beak, females collect the uropygial gland secretion and smear it directly on the eggshells and brood patch.
