Threats to Nature's Contributions to People Provided by Terrestrial Vertebrates Across Europe

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Species and ecosystem processes provide essential benefits to people, known as Nature's Contributions to People (NCP). However, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of NCP provided by terrestrial vertebrates on a macroecological scale, and of the threats they face. To address this, we built a comprehensive dataset that documents the

Acquisition of Uropygial Gland Microbiome by Hoopoe Nestlings [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobial Ecology, 2017
Mutualistic symbioses between animals and bacteria depend on acquisition of appropriate symbionts while avoiding exploitation by non-beneficial microbes. The mode of acquisition of symbionts would determine, not only the probability of encountering but also evolutionary outcomes of mutualistic counterparts. The microbiome inhabiting the uropygial gland

Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high‐impact joint

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 5, Page 1299-1312, May 2026.
Abstract Prokinesis—in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase—is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil),

Supporting cavity‐nesting birds in organic orchards and vineyards: Evaluating the use of artificial nest boxes

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April–June 2026.
Artificial nest boxes increased nesting opportunities for birds when tailored to their ecological needs. More complex and heterogeneous landscapes with greater forest and shrub cover increased nest box use. Nest box placement height and management‐related factors also influenced their occupation.

Evaporative Water Loss and Stopover Behavior in Three Passerine Bird Species During Autumn Migration

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Migratory birds are often not specifically adapted to arid conditions, yet several species travel across deserts during their journeys, and often have more or less short stopovers there. We investigated whether differences in thermoregulatory mechanisms,

Bridging the gap: improving methodologies for future avian microbiome research

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2026, Issue 2, March 2026.
Recent advances in the field of wild avian microbiome research have significantly deepened our understanding of the eco‐evolutionary dynamics of bird–microbe interactions. Consequently, the field is now approaching a pivotal moment in uncovering the ultimate factors shaping avian microbiome structure, especially in relation to birds' ecological ...

Opportunistic predation by carnivore mammals on females of pine processionary moths, Thaumetopoea pityocampa

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa, PPM) is a major defoliator in Mediterranean pine forests, with broad ecological and socioeconomic impacts. While vertebrate predators of its eggs, larvae, pupae, and imagos have been well documented, predation on adult females by mammals has not been previously described.

Wild turkey roost selection is more consistently associated with tree traits than microclimate

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, January 2026.
Animals must cope with a range of climatic conditions across seasons, and they can accomplish this by selecting habitats that are favourable for thermoregulation. Sheltering from environmental conditions can be particularly important for reducing energetic costs when animals are inactive, but the influence of microclimate on the fine‐scale selection of

Pruning for biodiversity: Drivers of cavity formation and use in Mediterranean holm oak woodlands

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our study emphasizes the role of both tree and cavity age in the long‐term establishment of cavity‐dependent vertebrates in holm oak woodlands. In the context of climate change—where holm oak trees are expected to replace more mesic, soft‐wooded tree species in the Mediterranean region—the persistence of cavity‐dependent vertebrate biodiversity will ...
