New Hoopoe Heuristic Optimization

open access: yesCoRR, 2012
Most optimization problems in real life applications are often highly nonlinear. Local optimization algorithms do not give the desired performance. So, only global optimization algorithms should be used to obtain optimal solutions. This paper introduces a new nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm, called Hoopoe Heuristic (HH).

Miniaturized multi-sensor loggers provide new insight into year-round flight behaviour of small trans-Sahara avian migrants

open access: yesMovement Ecology, 2018
Background Over the past decade, the miniaturisation of animal borne tags such as geolocators and GPS-transmitters has revolutionized our knowledge of the whereabouts of migratory species.

Multi-objective optimization of series-parallel system with mixed subsystems failure dependencies using NSGA-II and MOHH

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering
In complex systems, failure dependencies play a crucial role in determining their overall performance. This paper explores the multi-objective optimization of series-parallel systems with mixed failure dependencies.

The fateful landing of the hoopoe

open access: yesTerrain, 2019
This paper analyses the omen as a particular technique by which human subjects attempt to understand the uncertainties and misfortunes of their lives by way of receiving signs from the world. This method folds a singular event into a social form, a stabilized way of perceiving and responding to intimations of something about to change in the future. It

Adaptive immunity modulation linked to migratory behaviour in two partially migratory hoopoe Upupa epops populations

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology
Ecophysiology has enhanced our understanding of avian migration, yet many aspects of how these processes interrelate are still unclear. Partially migratory populations provide an ideal framework for its study in the wild, since resident and migratory ...

Gut microbiota variation and trophic niche differentiation among sympatric birds in a forest-farmland mosaic

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
The abundance and diversity of gut microbiota influence avian health, nutrient assimilation, and overall physiological performance. However, the extent to which variation in gut microbial composition corresponds to resource use and niche differenśtiation

Semi-natural habitats are key to breeding bird diversity in intensified vineyard landscapes across Europe

open access: yesBasic and Applied Ecology
In climatically suitable regions across Europe, vineyards can be the dominant perennial crop type. While many wine-growing landscapes are intensively managed, they may still be an attractive habitat for a wide range of bird species.
