Stability of Isolators at Large Horizontal Displacements

Earthquake Spectra, 1997
Elastomeric bearings used as seismic isolators are susceptible to a buckling type of instability similar to that of structural columns. The buckling load and buckling behaviour can be determined from an elastic analysis of the isolator modelled as a continuous composite column with bending and shear flexibility; this analysis cannot be used, however ...

Displaced horizontal cells in the chick retina

Journal of Morphology, 1984
AbstractThe retina of the chick contains retinal cells of a morphology very similar to that of the horizontal cells, but the perikarya, axons, and axon terminals lie in the inner plexiform layer. The discovery of this neuronal ectopia appears to support the idea that some horizontal and amacrine cells derive from a common, freely migrating cell.

Displaced horizontal cells and biplexiform horizontal cells in the mammalian retina

Visual Neuroscience, 1989
AbstractWe have used the neurofibrillar method of Gros-Schultze to stain the axonless horizontal cells of capybara, agouti, cat, and rabbit retinae. In all of these species, we have found two unusual horizontal cell morphologies: displaced horizontal cells and biplexiform horizontal cells.

Fluid displacement in a horizontal tube

Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 1996
Abstract The displacement of Newtonian fluids by non-Newtonian fluids in a horizontal cylindrical tube has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical expressions for the breakthrough time, a function of the constitutive constants of the fluids and of the flow parameters and geometry, are derived when the displacing fluids ...

Control of Styrene Exposure by Horizontal Displacement Ventilation

Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, 1993
The performance of a ventilation system for controlling airborne styrene exposure in lamination rooms has been evaluated. The system was designed to create a horizontal displacement flow in a tunnellike space. The effectiveness of the system was evaluated by conventional exposure measurements and with direct reading instruments.

Horizontal displacements in Japan

Tectonophysics, 1974
Abstract Recent horizontal displacements in Japan are discussed by using the results of the first-order triangulation surveys. Large horizontal displacements are found in East Hokkaido, Tohoku, South Kanto, Tokai and Nankai districts (Fig.1). Crustal activity in these districts is also briefly discussed.

A Mechanistic Model for Horizontal Gravel-Pack Displacement

SPE Journal, 2003
SummaryThis article presents the detailed formulation for each of the three steps of a horizontal gravel-pack displacement operation, including sand injection and alpha/beta waves propagation. The main core of the model, aiming to define alpha wave height, is based on a well known two-layer model.

Flows and Horizontal Displacements from Ring Diagrams

The Astrophysical Journal, 1998
A new algorithm for analyzing ring diagrams from helioseismic data is presented. This method is applied to two months of Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Imager data from 1996 May 24 through July 24 to study flows and to measure the ratio of the horizontal displacement to the vertical displacement for the oscillations. We find that (

Horizontal soil stress changes around displacement piles

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1990
AbstractA simplified analysis of the problem of horizontal soil stress changes around circular displacement piles, caused by pile placement, is presented. Pile installation is assumed to cause soil displacements in the horizontal direction only, thus yielding an axisymmetric problem.

Displacement of surface monuments: Horizontal motion

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1982
Measurements of tectonic deformation depend on both accurate instrumentation and adequate coupling of the apparatus to the earth's crust. Existing techniques, capable of resolving the signals of interest (strain rates of 10 n∈/yr), are mainly observatory based.
