Real‐Time Force Monitoring of Electrically Stimulated 3D‐Bioengineered Muscle Bioactuators Using Organic Sensors with Tunable Sensitivity

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
The integration of sensing elements in bioengineered actuators is key to obtain real‐time information about their performance and further control/automation. By coupling flexible organic field‐effect transistor to a skeletal muscle actuator we demonstrate the feasibility to record in real‐time its contractile behavior when stimulated by electrical ...

Sensor‐Embedded Muscle for Closed‐Loop Controllable Actuation in Proprioceptive Biohybrid Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Skeletal muscle tissue‐based bioactuators move in response to externally applied electrical stimuli in open‐loop control, which lacks knowledge of the actuator's state. Herein, a soft and fiber‐shaped piezoresistive mechanosensor that integrates with the soft tissue and operates in the cell culture environment is used to create the first proprioceptive

Monolithic Biohybrid Flexure Mechanism Actuated by Bioengineered Skeletal Muscle Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A scalable, monolithic biohybrid flexure mechanism is presented, integrating engineered skeletal muscle tissue with a soft, biocompatible, hollow silicone cylinder featuring dual pillars. Muscle contraction induces bending motion upon electrical stimulation, with performance governed by the structure's flexural rigidity.
