Disinfection of Hospital Wastewater by Continuous Ozonization
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2003The disinfection of hospital wastewaters using the ozonization process was studied. The concentrations of ozone required to reach a sudden drop of coliform and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the wastewater are 4.0-7.0 and 3.0-5.0 mg L(-1), respectively. For the hospital wastewater, the disinfection efficiencies were 0.518S(-1.1) for coliforms, 0.509S(-1.06)

Characterization and toxicity of hospital wastewaters in Turkey
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2017The aim of the study was to present first preliminary characterization of Turkish hospital wastewaters, their environmental risk, and a method for toxicity assessment. The hospital wastewater samples were collected from two of the largest medical faculty hospitals and a training and research hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.

Abstract The features of hospital wastewater (HWW) are identical to domestic wastewater in general, but a subset of HWW includes toxic, nonbiodegradable, infectious contaminants. The hospital effluents include a wide range of chemicals utilized in medical, laboratory, and study settings, as well as patient excreta.

Glutaraldehyde degradation in hospital wastewater by photoozonation
Environmental Technology, 2013In this paper, we assessed aqueous solutions of glutaraldehyde (GA), a chemical used for the disinfection of hospital materials, using advanced oxidative processes, O3, and UV, and the combination of the latter two. Assays with different ozone concentrations at distinct pH levels were conducted to determine the best treatment process. GA concentrations

Ecotoxicity of Hospital Wastewater
2017During the last 10 years, characterizing the ecotoxicity of hospital wastewater (HWW) has focused on different aspects. Initially, it mainly consisted in collecting information on ecotoxic substances used in hospitals (disinfectants, detergents, pharmaceuticals, etc.).

Features of hospital wastewater treatment
Vodosnabzhenie i sanitarnaia tehnika,

Monitoring hospital wastewaters for their probable genotoxicity and mutagenicity
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2014Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Excluding the genetic factors, environmental factors, mainly the pollutants, have been implicated in the causation of the majority of cancers. Wastewater originated from health-care sectors such as hospitals may carry vast amounts of carcinogenic and genotoxic chemicals to surface waters or any other source

Ecotoxicological and Genotoxic Assessment of Hospital Laundry Wastewaters
Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2014The aim of the present study was to assess the ecotoxicity and genotoxicity of hospital laundry wastewaters generated from a regional hospital located in Rio Pardo Valley in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Physicochemical, microbiological, ecotoxicological, and genotoxic analyses were performed, and the results indicate that some parameters ...

This volume addresses hospital effluents in terms of their composition and the management and treatment strategies currently (being) adopted around the globe. In this context, one major focus is on pharmaceutical compounds: their observed concentration range, ecotoxicological effects, and the removal efficiency achieved by the different technologies ...

Environmental Research
The pervasive presence of drugs in aquatic environments has emerged as a pressing global issue, with hospital wastewater (HWW) recognized as a significant pollution source. This study evaluates the occurrence, removal efficiency, and environmental risks of 21 common pharmaceuticals or their metabolites in HWW.
