Co-option of Plasmodium falciparum PP1 for egress from host erythrocytes
Plasmodium protein phosphatase PP1 is essential for the asexual proliferation of malaria parasites. Here the authors show that PP1 regulates egress of parasites from host red blood cells, integrating parasite intrinsic pathways with environmental signals

This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

The integrated concept of disease resistance; a new view including horizontal and vertical resistance in plants [PDF]
Horizontal, uniform, race-non-specific or stable resistance can be discerned according to Van der Plank, from vertical, differential, race-specific or unstable resistance by a test in which a number of host genotypes (cultivars or clones) are tested ...

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

In Planta Transcriptome and Proteome Profiles of Spongospora subterranea in Resistant and Susceptible Host Environments Illuminates Regulatory Principles Underlying Host–Pathogen Interaction [PDF]
Spongospora subterranea is an obligate biotrophic pathogen, causing substantial economic loss to potato industries globally. Currently, there are no fully effective management strategies for the control of potato diseases caused by S. subterranea.

Multiphoton imaging of host‐pathogen interactions
AbstractStudying the events that occur when a pathogen comes into contact with its host is the basis of the field of infection biology. Over the years, work in this area has revealed many facets of the infection process, including attachment, invasion and colonization by the pathogen, and of the host responses, such as the triggering of the immune ...

Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Genome-wide analysis reveals loci encoding anti-macrophage factors in the human pathogen burkholderia pseudomallei K96243 [PDF]
Burkholderia pseudomallei is an important human pathogen whose infection biology is still poorly understood. The bacterium is endemic to tropical regions, including South East Asia and Northern Australia, where it causes melioidosis, a serious disease ...
